When driving back from work today I was stuck in a traffic jam for about 40mins.

The temperature gauge (usually around the 87-90c mark) went up, was over 100C at one point, all quick rapidly in the space of a few mins. Fearing things about to go pop I cranked the heater onto max and the temperature immediately dropped back down to 87-90c. Once I started moving everything was back to normal. When I got back home I stopped and let the car idle for a little while to see if it crept back up which it did. I've checked the coolant levels and the radiator fan to see if it was working and all seems fine.

Anyone any suggestions as to a cause and if it's potentially expensive? :( It's had a B service recently and a note on the service book was 'antifreeze ok'.

As had been said on here before, some cars go to 105 before the electric fan kicks in. Is this the case here then. 100 in itself is not to worry about, it is when it does not reduce when the fan kicks in or you get going again mate. ;) ;)

the temp did drop once moving. I whacked the heater on once it was reading over 100c, ran out of bottle as I wasn't sure if a fan was going to or was already running. It just really worried me that the gauge moved that much in such a short space of time.

Don't worry, as the traffic jam was the cause not a defect mate. ;) ;)

cheers LOL The only thing that worries me is if I hadn't put the heater on and windows down I don't know if I would have been playing host to a geyser or whether it would have dropped by itself. I'll have to grit my teeth the next time this happens. How much is a replacement engine on a C36 BTW? :p

How big did you say your bank balance was?

Always worth looking here for anything big! Site is a bit clunky and obviously will be limits on what is available but you can find fully refurbed & MB guaranteed engines & boxes as relative bargins

such as the fact that a refurbed 320Cdi engine for my car from MB recycling would be

Euro 5,906

Arrrrggghhhh!

Which at £4000 at todays exchange rate - is a real bargain, considering what you are getting. Some people pay that for a bloody big telly - fools

Not too bad really with 12 months warranty, but certainly not hoping I will ever need this info!

took the car to a dealer who diagnosed a seized viscous fan coupling. had that changed and temp still rises. seems the 2 auxilliary fans at the front aren't kicking in. Back to the dealer tomorrow, joy! Hope it's the thermostat

nope it will be they fan control relay under the lt hand wheel arch bloody daft place to put a relay known fault mbz will not do a recall cost too much NB part is on back order so many needed and also mbz want to know the chassis number first have a look at the american mbz web site

turns out one of the aux fans was sticking and blowing a fuse. fuse replaced and fan stripped and fitted back in, surprised they didn't say it had to be replaced. temp gauge is lovely now, stays at the 87 degree mark without moving. Dealer didn't charge for the whole day it took them to sort everything out either.

Aren't the 2 fans at the front for the A/C only? On my C36 they only ever function when the A/C is on. The C36's main fan is the viscous one I always thought althought I stand to be corrected if anyone knows otherwise :)

yup, the 2 aux fans are mainly for the AC but as I have my AC on 24/7 they were not kicking in thus sending the engine temp rocketing due to the extra load the condensor put on the system.

umm if the fault comes back i would put good money on the relay being faulty the seal on the outside dries out when in the garage and when in road use ie wet they go faulty again honest

well, as it was the fan cover that was catching therefore causing it to overload and pop the fuse I don't see what it has to do with the relay? you've got a fixation on this relay don't you? LOL
