Phew!

Last night, after having covered some 200 miles already, I left the job and drove home.

Left the car park and the car shuddered and bumped and shook and coughed with no power. Backed off on the gas to tickover revs and it made very slow forward progress.

Drove (slipstreamed a HGV) the 40 miles up the M6 / M42 from Coventry way to Solihull to my local MB garage in limp mode @ about 50 mph but with no power when you depress the loud pedal.

It's a 2006 E320 cdi with 62K and was bought as an AUC on October 1 2009.

I've covered about 30 odd K in it thus far and it was last serviced at MB about 7K miles ago.

They rang me this afternoon to tell me the turbo is toast and needs to be replaced. They will contact MB warranty in the morning for the go-ahead.

I'm trying to get a loan car and they have said they will try.

I wonder how much this will cost?

Do turbos have any known longevity problems?

AUC warranty - update

Just had a call from MB service and the turbo is fitted but it seems the exhaust manifold is cracked and a bolt is sheared.

The very helpful chap in service tells me MB warranty will not cover the manifold and it's going to be around £400 fitted.

Surely not! My AUC warranty booklet clearly states the exhaust system is covered.

Any ideas chaps?

That manifild bolt always snaps! The turbo failure is also a common one now.

So, is the bolt a "known problem"?

Just don't want to part with £400.

The manifold is part of the exhaust so should be covered in my view. Plus if the bolt always snaps they should know that and price to include the manifold as a matter of course....

Latest update

What a great chap John the service manager at MB Solihull is.

He has finally wrung agreement from MB warranty to fix the manifold.

Not going to be ready tonight though. Waiting on parts.

Courtesy car will be provided tonight (been using Her Ladyship's 120D )

Hmm...OK. Methinks they just try it on. Surprising how many customers will just pay up, especially if the car is run through a business.

Like the 50% goodwill offers. That's all the job really costs them anyway.

Shouldn't Mobilo have provided a hire car?

Not if he's made it to the dealer. Mobilo will only kick in if recovered.

I learnt the hard way with french cars that it's sometimes better to breakdown than rely on a dealer finding a courtesy car at short notice.
