The E500 Cabriolet / Coupe Thread

but in reality the exhaust note is addictive, as is the diabolical mpg that goes with ‘playing with the noise’!

My E500 is pretty quiet but I found on my recent trip to France that high speed acceleration made it feel that it had a giant bungee cord pulling it towards the horizon. In non-bungee mode it was amazingly abstinent. In bungee mode it was the opposite.....

Enjoy it I bet it puts a smile on every time you get in

That it does ! I set off to go to B&Q the other day - about a 12 mile round trip. By the time I got back I'd done 62 miles as I took a detour home through the Peak District ...

Yep - can confirm it does have bungee cord mode!

Great update. In the absence of any hens’ teeth (facelifted E350CGI or E500 cabs) I got impatient and went a bit off-piste and opted for an Audi S5 Cabriolet, which is actually very nice indeed, if not an MB.

It’s a little more aurally aggressive than I would have chosen, but in reality the exhaust note is addictive, as is the diabolical mpg that goes with ‘playing with the noise’! I just have to learn to control it.

I did flirt with the idea of a S5 as as you say the E500's a harder to find.

It could do with a bit more noise, in Sport it sounds a touch more raspy but not overly. I don't think I could live with a X-Pipe type noise though.

One of the rare E500 bi-turbo's Cabrios for sale here

Little bit under-specced - No Harman Karden, 18's rather than 19's, reverse camera? but looks tidy in the pictures.

I can vouch for the performance of these though!

Wilmslow to Droitwich - sticking to every speed limit and a fair few miles through the roadworks on the M6 & M5.

37.2 mpg - Not too shabby for 400+ bhp V8.

Thought I'd update this tread with some E500 Warranty Extension / Running Costs Musings....

In case you were wondering what it costs to run a V8 E500 …

My E500 Cabrio is now 6 years old but with only 21,500 miles on the clock.

When purchased it was at 14,000 and I took a Tier 1 Mercedes Warranty a few months after buying it. As I bought the car privately, at under dealer price I splashed out on the warranty for peace of mind.

Last year the warranty was £1050 - they have just offered renewal at £679 for another 12 months.

So … my service plan is £35 pm = £420 p/a plus £679 warranty = £1100 odd for 12 months of pretty much worry free motoring.

On my mileage of 7000 pa that’s a set of tyres every other year - say average £400 per year inc tracking, plus brakes every few years.

So that averages about £1600 per year in servicing and sundries if I extend the warranty.

So total monthly costs ….
  • Service & Warranty £133
  • Road Tax £27 (£315 pa)
  • Insurance £50
  • Fuel £125 (7000m per year £1.25 litre - OBC - is showing av 26.4mpg over last 5000 miles)
£335 per month = £4000 per year - or 57p a mile.

Depreciation is likely to be in the £250 per month range at the moment but this will ease up a bit as the curve flattens. I’m not bothered about this cost as my thinking is to just hold on to it for as long as possible.

I think I’m going to take up the extended warranty offer at £679. It's a fully specced car with Distronic and Blind Spot assist so there are many expensive gadgets that could go fail and of course there is a fair amount of stuff under the bonnet with those twin turbos and a that V8…....

Hi all. I'm very interested in an early 5.5 e500 cab.

I'm going to look at one this weekend. Mercedes are not my speciality so any hints as to what to look out for would be useful.

Anyone here use their's as a daily? My commute is only 13 miles each way, so it'll be used more for wafting at the weekends

With all cabriolets make sure the roof mechanism works flawlessly by operating it several times. Any signs of sticking or hesitation be wary- these cars need expert fettling if there are problems. The hood and rear window should be pristine. Too many have been lured by a test drive on a sunny day with the top down, which is of course how the car is designed to be used, only to be let down in the first few weeks of ownership with a stuck hood and an oncoming rainstorm.

You don't use VPower in that beautifull engine :(

Thanks, other than that are they pretty much bullet proof? Any engine/Gearbox noises to look out for?

I'll video it running if I can, so that you can all run the rule over it.

The E coupe is actually an anomaly. Although badged as an E its actually based on the W204 C class platform. That's no bad thing tho as the W204 is a pretty well sorted chassis. The Mercedes model designation is C207

UK experience of the big V8 petrol engines is limited as so few were sold in the UK, more running experience is likely to be found on some of the US forums.
Unaware of any inherent faults with the M278 engine unlike its predecessor M273 which had timing chain issues

In terms of switch on check all the warning lights come on on ignition switch on and extinguish on engine start. W204's have problems with their motorised steering lock mechanisms so the ignition switch on/steering unlocking should be without hesitation.

Changed my mind about the one I was going to view. They refurbed the wheels and in the process changed them from the chrome finish to a gunmetal grey and added £500 to the price.media (8).jpeg media (9).jpeg

^^^ To be fair, they have probably done the potential buyer a favour. The diamond cut wheels will have needed doing at some point as they don't suit the UK weather at all! No need for the £500 price hike though, but there again that will just be the dealer on trying to get the refurb cost back with interest :wallbash:
