The EV fact thread

Some ‘blokes’ need to get a backbone.

@Darrell
its my car paid for with my money.

Every relationship is different. Some couples keep their finances separate and make independent decisions, some couples pool everything and make joint decisions, and some do a mix of the two. There is no right or wrong, just different.

I wouldn’t dream of buying a car without Mrs D’s blessing and as a result I have literally “not bought” hundreds of cars over the years. That works perfectly for us - as we think and act as one - but would be some people’s idea of living hell.

Vive la difference.

I don't know, I'd far rather watch him than the majority of "automotive influencers". An educational understanding delivered with just the right amount of flamboyance, and probably the closest thing we'll ever have to "Car Jesus".
Amen re the “influencers,” but LJKS was a Surbiton Llewelyn Bowen behind that technical genius.

A challenge to modern eyes and sensibilities with his traditional values from chain-smoked Russian cigarettes to Jewish orthodoxy. A motoring Brian Sewell.

Fantastic man: changed my view of Preludes and Bristols forever.

I don't mind EVs, but I will miss the triumph of engineering of ice and the character that has. Does anyone know what the rules on motorbikes and mopeds will be?

Yep, I expect so. 🙄
That is the general idea , as long as we can try to keep it on track .

I'm all for a good debate, it is a forum after all, it's when it starts getting silly, (which usually isn't to long) that bugs me a tad. 🙂👍

Which (ICE) car are you going to replace it with?
To be honest Bobby I have been trying to replace it for years now but she just cant' 'see the point' and thinks a new car for here would be a 'waste of money' ( I really love this woman !)

This is how much she likes owning a 19 year old 1.8 petrol Vauxhaull . The headliner began to seperate a year or so back ang got so bad that it took on the appearance of the inside of a big top in a storm, I had hoped she would see this as a sign to get rid of the Zafira.

She Googled the symptoms.

Just yesterday I removed the headliner and dropped it off at a local Auto trimmers for repair .... Add to that it had a new water pump and cam belt a month ago we have spent twice as much as the bloody thing is worth , but it has never let her down in 18 years and costs pennies to own.

Some have said 'why dont you surprise her with a new car with a big ribbon tied around it ?'

I say to them , ' You do not know my wife...'

But to answer your question . It will probably be replaced by an EV ...If I can get another 5 years out of the old girl...and the Zafira.

Remaining fully on track, EV facts that are observed and proven by me:
  • The little BMW costs the equivalent of a 200mpg IC car for me to fuel.
  • The energy store in the EV is close to 300Kgs, the IC equivalent is less than 30kgs....
  • The EV has no gears, an a IC car between 3 and 9.
  • Both can be fun to drive in their own ways.

It sounds like a good reliable car and has been looked after so I don’t blame her wanting to replace it - I do the same, I maintain them well and keep them for ages!

It sounds like justifying a replacement full stop is the issue rather than justifying an EV as a replacement - a more expensive ICE wouldn’t fit the bill either at the moment.

Might be wrong but I haven’t seen any discussion of regulating old motorbikes and mopeds out of existence. It’s just new petrol motorbikes will be stopped.

On the electric front, the electric growth is phenomenal. Not only the obvious electric “platform” scooters and e-bikes but also the electric (Vespa style) scooters. The era of the 30mph electric bicycle and the 70mph electric motorbike is here, no matter what the regulators decree.

The electric assist cuts out at 15.5mph on e-bicycles sold in the UK. The only way the average e-biker would get their 50kg+ machines up to 30 mph legally is if they accidently rode off a cliff.

I've certainly seen them riding faster than cars doing 20mph in our street (a wide road).

These are typically black electric bikes and look like privately owned as opposed to the shared bike schemes e.g. Lime.

I wonder if they may have been modified somehow?

To clarify, I am taking of power
-assisted pedal bicycles, not mopeds or scooters.

Modified in some way no doubt, probably via software.

Any modified e-bicycle that exceeds the stated speed and power requirements of current UK law is legally classed as a motorbike or moped with all the associated registration (number plates), insurance and tax requirements.

Or agricultural and site vehicles (tractors, combines, fork lifts, JCBs, bulldozers, telehandlers, etc. etc.)?

2 years ago I bought a small (25 bhp) diesel tractor for use on our 7 acre smallholding. They do an electric version which is virtually identical in spec. apart from the engine - the run time of up to 6 hours would have been perfect for me, but the huge difference in cost made it a complete non-starter. Current prices (both plus 20% VAT):

When I purchased mine the electric version was almost three times the price of the diesel one

As an aside the emissions limits for diesel off-road vehicles with under 25.5 bhp are significantly higher, so they're generally much simpler engines with no DPF/cat/EGR/etc. required:

The engine in mine is 1300 cc 3 cyl. Mitsubishi. It's pretty economical on fuel - it has a 24 litre tank which I'd guess I fill 4 or 5 times a year. My home charging station :D
