The hunt is on for a winter hack

Great choice Spike

If you need a hand with anything, let me know :)

You're too late.

I've got my grubby hands on my winter hack already.

I've been pouring over the last ten years worth of MOT's.... 2000 miles a year its been doing?

The old girl's in for a bit of a shock.

Slightly more than the SL?

I suspect it'll be quite a lot better. The official 1990 blurb talks of 43mpg at a steady 56mph and 30mpg around town.

I drove the car into work today. Pretty sure its diff noise I hear rather than wheel bearings. It seems to be less noticeable the faster you go which is a blessing.

A bit of research suggests it is a common problem on the 190's and that they can go on and on for many years with a droning diff without actually failing.

First thing to do I guess is get it on the ramp and confirm it is the diff and then see if replacing the diff oil quietens it down at all. I don't think its an urgent problem but it does somewhat mar what is otherwise a very nice drive.

Outside of the diff wine she's an absolute peach. :thumb:

"Hell I've even been toying with the idea of getting a 400cc scooter (Burgman)."

It rains you get wet, icy you fall off... and that hurts !

Winter hack pictures.

I still cant get over how much car this is for the money.

Looks great, nice and unmolested. 2.0 Auto about the best combo IMHO - cheap and easy to work on, relatively good on fuel, comfortable etc.

Make sure all of the drain plugs on the body are clear and keep an eye on the coolant - might be worth a flush and changing it if it's not been done in a while, they can clog up if neglected and cook the HG.

My diff did that, I drained it (very smelly oil came out, but no metal bits) and refilled, with just under a litre of comma 85/90 gear oil (about £3 from Wilkinsons) and "Forte Diff treatment" (bought it on Ebay for about £15). It took about a 100 ish miles to work, but the Forte stuff has completely silenced my diff :) A nice cheap fix.

Just ordered some Forte Diff oil.

In this kind of environment I dont see any harm in trying a drop of snake oil - I guess its just a friction modifier of some sort.

Lovely car, look after it though, seems spotless.

I only photo'd the good side :D

There's a couple of dings on the nearside - nothing major but it does render the car in the "not spotless" category. Ther rest of it though (especially the interior) is very good.

I'd better change the tyres on it though they're 13 years old and the sidewalls are cracked all over and the rubber has turned to nylon or something. The car will wheelspin and kick the backend out at will in the wet which came as a surprise for such a little motor. I can only assume its the tyres and that replacement will 'cure' this.

Are these tyres for sale?? :D

A bit of an old thread revival here as the time has come to sell the old 190.

Following on from a years worth of commuting, I drove the 190 down to Croatia last summer. It stayed there all year, did last Summers hols with it, a cheeky weekend ski trip with it in Slovenia, another at easter and then another weeks camping in Croatia this Summer before the long trip home to the UK again.

So the car is back in the UK with a fresh MOT and road tax and needs to find a new home as I really do not need to have 4 cars.

Before I stick it on ebay I thought I'd bring it up in this thread in case someone is after one.

Looking for £600 (since I've just taxed it)

[edit] Comes complete with reasonably new winter tyres :D
