The White Dog

Sorry to hear this Rash, gutted for you mate.Hope it all works well

I`ll have to disagree simply because,if you can`t look after an animal then don`t get one

It was an accident though Dash; I doubt that the dog owner woke up that day and thought "I know, I'll not tether my dog properly when I take it out for a walk later, so it'll get run over and killed".

I know what you`re saying but this chap does not seem like he cared much

Hey bud :thumb:

As the incident has been disected more, it has become quite a complex one.

Well, for me, I think it is my love for animals that complicates it.

But I agree with you regarding the owner - if scooter man was indeed the owner as he claimed.

He really didn't seem that bothered. Didn't stick around to talk to me or give me his details.

Even from his point of view, he didn't even seem interested in getting MY details, which was also strange and weird. :dk:

I mean, fair enough, he acknowledged that the dog got loose and bolted straight to my car, but still, you'd have thought he would want to know who I was in case he needed my details later on.

I understand, maybe I`m simply talking based on what I see round here
Only last week someones dog got hit by a car right outside my work :( lucky it was just minor

Good luck with the claim, Rashman.

I hope that they do have insurance so you're not out of pocket. :thumb:

Yeah, cheers Lee.

I'm hoping the insurance will come into play too, but I reckon I'll be paying my excess and putting it through my insurance :(

The other concern for me is getting the car back up to standard too. Well, my standard, I guess

Just have to hang on and ride this out, see how it turns out

Accidents are exactly what insurance is designed to cover.

Very sad about the dog.

I hope that your car gets sorted soon.

True, which is why I am hoping the owner at least has/ had pet insurance.

It is still abit up in the air as to whether pet insurance - or the owners particular policy - covers for this incident, but my insurance company said that this would pretty much be my only chance.

Yes, it is very sad.

I spoke to the vet to let them know the police will be contacting them and asked how the dog had got on.. expecting her to say "suffered a broken leg but will be ok". When she said it had passed away, it was very saddening. The fact that it died, following contact with my car, sunk in. :(

It is awful hitting anything on the road, even a Rabbit makes me feel really bad. I have two dogs and they are both insured, I will look at the policy out of interest see if RTA's are covered. Sorry for the hassle you are having.

From pet insurance website

An additional benefit of most pet insurance is third party cover. Should your dog cause a road traffic accident you could be liable for costs. (could)

if your cat or dog damages someone else's property or causes a road traffic accident

i think you could claim from them, if you have the heart to do it, very difficult call !

Hey Paul,

Yes, it is not at all nice hitting something. It's the first time I've come into contact with something and it was very unpleasant. :(

Thanks for your input on pet insurance.
Perhaps do have a look at your policy to see what it says out of interest.

A difficult call indeed, considering the emotions of the owner / owners.

Good luck again bud, I know it must be hard especially as the dog passed away now, must be horrible feeling but out of your hands and I’m sure your AMG will look as good as new once MB finish with it, it's a a very minor damage.

Things like this happen, just got to get on with it let the insurance do their bit and move on..

Book time off from family and work in advance as I know you will probably be sleeping in the garage for days polishing and waxing it when it comes back from repair. :D

keep us posted.

Hahaha... you know me too well! :D
yes, there will be much waxing when the car is done and back home.

It'll take me some time to get the front bumper up to the 74 layers that are on the rest of the car , but I'll get there! :D

Yes, thankfully it is pretty minor damage.. could have been alot worse.

Luckily the fog light, head light and front wing were spared.

It's just the bumper and wheel arch liner from what I can see.

The dog passing away is very sad.. I really can't believe how strong an impact it was. But it wasn't the biggest of dogs so its body took it hard. :(

As you say, very much out of my hands. Will let the insurance do their thing. Time to see how efficient the whole process is these days.

In the moment though, if I'd just watched my dog get run over, it wouldn't be the first thing in my mind to hang about exchanging details, I'd be straight to the vets trying to save my dogs life.

Yes, but there was:-

(a) the young lady walking the dog
(b) the old man on the mobility scooter
(c) the driver of the car that removed the dog

I don't think all 3 of them needed to disappear without leaving any information.
Sorry but whilst I can understand your thoughts, in this situation, IMHO, there is no excuse.

Hi Rash,
Really sorry to hear about the dog and your car, especially as I know how much you cherish your car, you’ve got my number if you want to have a good moan or if you fancy scraping the barrel this week end text me and I will pop down in the XKR your more than welcome to have a go and maybe it will take your mind off things

What a nightmare all round. :(

My parents (did) breed and show Golden Retrievers. They still own Goldens, but have stopped breeding and showing although my mother is still very involved in her local Golden Retriever club at comittee level.

A few years ago my dad was walking their four dogs. Out in the hills a couple of miles from home at the foot of Bleaklow in the dark Peak. They were chasing stones and playing in a river when one dog (Jade) got spooked badly (grass snake we assume*) and uncharectaristically ran. My dad got the other three dogs on their leads quickly and chased after the Jade. Long story short Jade made for home which crossed one main road. Unfortunately when the dog ran across the road she was hit by a car. The driver could do nothing.

The dog limped home but went via the next door neighbours, my dad turned up soon after exhausted and the car driver parked up looking at his quite badly damaged car.
It was clear to us that Jade wasn't going to survive, but a fast journey to the vets was made in the hope we were wrong. The dog passed away shortly after arriving. *The vet was the one who suggested a grass snake bit Jade when he examined her before putting her to sleep.

Before setting off my dad found the driver of the car and brought him over to the house to quickly exchange details, promising him that the repair costs would be covered. The car driver had no idea which way Jade had run after the accident so wasn't sure where to go or what to do at that point. The driver was very apologetic, and sad when he saw us all fighting back tears. Jade was a family pet first and foremost, but also was the first dog my mum and dad had (proudly) bred and qualified for Crufts - which was to take place a few months after she passed away.

My parents didn't have pet insurance. Having upto seven dogs they felt insurance was too expensive. Instead they put money away each month which has always covered vets bills. To safeguard against accidents they had a policy through the Golder Retriever Club, and it is that policy which paid the car owner, so the car owner incurred no cost to get his car back to its condition before the bump. Had that not been the case they would have considered house insurance, or using the 'vet money' they kept in leue of paying pet insurance.

It's very sad when a pet dies in circumstances like these, and it is very upsetting for the owner(s), but it doesn't alter the fact that with pet ownership comes responsibility - and putting right damage caused by your pet in an accident when at fault is part of that responsibility and grief should not be an excuse to ignore that.

Yes, it's true..

I can understand more that the lady and the driver needed to get going pretty urgently (although, like you, I expected them to at least exchange words/ details with me!), but the guy in the scooter (he was around 30-35 years old, not an old guy) could do nothing more and had plenty of time to talk to me. He didn't do this and just buggered off before I could even digest what was happening.

Hey Steve,

Thanks for posting up bud - really appreciate your kind words.

Thanks for the offer of getting together this weekend... I may well take you up on that! :thumb:

We can have a good catch-up and check out that new beast of yours! ;)

I'll talk to you soon :)

Hi mate,

Firstly, I just want to say thanks for taking the time to share your very sad story and your thoughts.

Really sorry to hear about Jade. Bless her.. trying to make her way home.. very sad indeed :(

I have to say that I am very grateful for your post. Although your account of Jade is very saddening, it's also nice to hear from someone like you, who obviously has a great love for dogs, who also shares the opinion that dog owners have the responsibility to address any damages caused by their pet.

As mentioned previously, it is a difficult call regarding seeking costs for damages.

But there are 2 sides to it. One one side, you have a dog fatally wounded and its owner very upset, and on the other side, you have an innocent party whos car was damaged who is now faced with getting it repaired.

The issue of money/ cost is always going to be a sore topic in these sorts of situations, but nonetheless, the repair to my car is not going to be cheap at all.

I'm guess-timating that the front bumper alone will be more than £1k, then it needs painting, new wheel arch liner and labour for the work plus my excess.

I know I have insurance which will act on this but it really shouldn't be my insurance company's job to do so. I'll end up paying for this in the long run through increased premuims in the years to come for having to put this down as a claim on my policy.

If it was a crappy little car with minimal costs to repair it, I wouldn't bat an eyelid.. but this is going to be a pretty expensive repair.

I took the car in to Maidstone Mercedes today who have inspected the car.

Thankfully, it seems that all the car needs will be a new bumper and new wheel arch liner, as I suspected. It may be that there is more damage (to clips, mounting etc) that we haven't seen that will come to our attention when the bumper is removed, but we'll just have to wait and see.

But they didn't feel it was necessary to remove the bumper today as they are confident that it is just a new bumper and arch liner that is needed.

They will send their estimate to the insurance company and I should hear from Maidstone soon to find out what the next step. I am curious to know what the estimate is, so I will probably call them tomorrow anyway.
