My foremans got a focus diesel estate 02 plate just clicked over 100k and hes had it from nearly new, a couple of rear wheel bearings and a door lock set and i think thats it, its the tddi one before the tdci version.

What are focus diesels like?

I'd go for something Japanese, unless the lady is a petrolhead. Not diesel unless she does high mileage. Diesels for lots of short trips don't make sense.

Alternatively go for Octavia.

If she's used to a Corsa then why not consider a 1.3CDTi, it'd have to be a plain automatic instead of the tiptronic though. Good economy and surprisingly nippy too.
