Im thinking about E class w211 estate. Which engine would you recommend?
I got BMW 330Ci and love the sound and the power it has. My wife has C180 coupe which if I would know it will be so boring I would get C with bigger engine. The diesel engines are good but never was fan of those engines, specially that with my heavy foot it might not last long.
Part from all above which petrol engine is good and why and same about diesel which and why please.

Buy a V6 320 CDI, awesome engine and plenty of power ( remap to 270 bhp, 420 torques )

If you want speed, an E55K/E63.

If you want good performance, smoothness and a bit softer, an E500.

Really does depend on your mileage, what you have to spend and what you want the car for...

If you're a petrolhead, you'll want the E55K; 476bhp of heart stopping loveliness...

Dont discount the I6 cdi, mine has been remapped and perfectly capable with keeping with e46 330i in a straight line and can easily achive 50+mpg if you need to.

I did a 15.2 1/4 at 90mph lol
When I drive myn back to back, the I6 feels so much more "solid" than the V6. For you, I would recommend a V6 cdi sport estate.

Not to detract from the thread, as above, have a look at your needs and buy accordingly. The youngest 211s are now 6 years old but, what great value for money they are.In terms of the estate, I reckon it's one of the best cars in the world.

Bit leggy but if it's been looked after ,why not.

A friend of mine has a e280 cdi sport on a 2007, and a few peeps i know have bought Mb's with the v6 cdi engine yes they are powerfull go really well but i dont think they are as robust as the I6 for the extra hp i dont think its worth the difference in mpg or running costs.

Since my trip to Austria ive fallen again for my I6 even deaper and she's running so smooth since the trip feels like a different car, Of course may all be in the mind lol.

If i do change it will be for the e55k

Sorry for thread derailment :/

Im doing 30-40 miles a day. So the car will be used to get to work, weekends to tow light trailer with my quad, short trips around UK and let say once a year long trip 1000 miles each way.
Just thinking if diesel will be good to start it up and than after 12 miles stop the engine? That could kill the engine as far I know its not good for short distance.

Can't comment on the long term effect of short trips, mine has no dpf to worry about being a late 2003, but only gets driven on 50+ mile trips, Last trip was 640 miles across europe on 1 tank of fuel at a ave speed of 65mph did 1,800miles over 4 days and it loved it :)

W211s are brilliant cars, although make sure to go with a facelift car. Try and avoid anything made before 2006. I would agree that the 320 CDI is the one to go for, as it is very powerful yet economical too. I went from an E90 325i to the Mercedes and never regretted it all.

And they look great! :-)

I love my 2005 E280 V6 also. I'd say expect 30-35mpg.

The I6 from what I have read is easily more economical, but I guess it depends on your budget and what age car you are looking at.

I've had mine 7 years now (the longest I have owned any car) and is 10 years old this December, for the most part it has been pretty reliable. On V6 models you need to keep an eye on the turbo seals as they can work themselves loose and can cause issues, glow plugs are a common fault also.

I've had mine remapped this year also and its given it a new lease of life.

The sport model looks the best, but the ride can be fairly harsh at times, if that isn't an issue for you I would be going for an E280/E320 Sport Estate (otherwise look for a car without the 18"s), I wouldn't worry about 320 over 280 if you aren't adverse to remapping as they map to the same output anyway.

For that sort of mileage, I'd buy a petrol personally.

If you do opt for a diesel, diesels do take longer to reach temperature but I would have thought 12 miles should be enough.

Just make sure you do an Italian tune up once a week to be sure!

You could buy a smaller diesel...
