Hi All well it's time to change the work wagon which is a Subaru Outback 3.0R (pics in gallery) so the weekend will be spent looking around the dealers. Just wondered what you thought I should look at as a replacement, requirements are. Has to be new, has to be 4x4, has to have performance and has to be big enough to haul round a family of 5. I would like to spend around £30k plus or minus a few £. Not considering the M class as had one before and can still feel the pain, so don't want to relive those nightmares, although I'm told they are alot better these days, but I'm still not going there. Let me know your thoughts as you might come up with something I haven't thought of many thanks:) :)

A few thoughts:

You could consider a LR D3 although performance (lack of) might be an issue.

Freelander 2 cheaper and a bit faster than D3 depending on engine type. 3.2 petrol ough to be quite quick.

New Audi Q5 available soon, don't know about prices but would have thought it would be in FL2 territory plus a bit. Some info on Audi web site.

VW Touareg.

If it didn't have to be new, a nice old 300TE 4-matic estate would fit the bill nicely

Petrol or diesel?

Toerag V10 TDI or Q7? Not much else is there? Possibly a Cayenne  ?

Forget a Disco if you want performance, or a Freelander for a family of 5.

Good time to buy for a good discount (not that they'll give you much trade-in for the Outback ... )

Probably wouldn't get a Q7 for less than £35k.

V10 Toerags list at about £62k. I know you'll get a discount but not down to around the given target of abut £30k.

Would an Audi A6 3.0Tdi Allroad be a good bet, or even a A6 estate.

4x4 wise an ML is a nice bet, and there are 320cdis in your budget.

Thanks A6 Allroad is prob top of my list too at the moment, think the tourag and cayenne well out of my reach

will keep you all posted thanks:)

What about the new Volvo XC60 coming out soon ?? May be too small but T5 should have plenty of go...

Not what he's looking for ;-)

I have to say, I agree - my test drive of the ML was very disappointing...

Lined up a couple of test drives today and tomorrow list as follows

1. Audi A6 Allroad
2. LR Freelander
3. Subaru Forester
4. Ford Kuga
5. MB ML (just in case I'm wong)

Will keep you posted thanks for all the help and suggestions so far

That is quite a range of cars -- prices and performance wise -- will make interesting reading...

Well had a busy weekend test driving cars so thought I would share my thoughts with you I have also included the best price I could get the salesman down to for the various models. Please note these are only short 20 -30 minute drives until I get a shortlist

1. Audi A6 Allroad 2.7 Tdi Quattro £31,420
Nice car comfortable, good grip, good cornering ability with nice turn in and plenty of power, appeared very thirsty from the readout never saw it better 29 mpg even coasting nicely under light throttle on the motorway which did worry me a little, not a bad discount but poor trade in on Subaru, also £400 VED initial thoughts good performance car but overpriced and Thirsty?

2. Landrover Freelander 2.2 Td4 HSE £28,105
Nice looking demo car in lucozade orange, well spec'd interior good high driving position and functional controls all to hand not as big as I had expected, seats a little narrow on the base and performance very poor, petrol would have been better but sky high emissions and I'm trying to get better mpg from the next car. Good build quality a little small but performance from the 2.2 diesel is poor.

3. Subaru Forester 2.0 XS Petrol £20,000
No diesel option available at present (due next month maybe?) but original boxer diesel units have been problematic as dealer openly admitted. Cheapest car tested and it shows, build quality no where near that of my Outback and the thickness of the metal would be more at home on a buiscuit tin,2 litre petrol gave lacklustre perfromance and inside plastics hard and cheap quality, nice sizeable car and dealer gave me best trade in on the Outback (to be expected)

4. Ford Kuga 2.0 TDCi Titanium X with RS Pack £24,370
This car suprised the hell out of me, I expected another Mondeo derivative but not so, car is built on a reworked chassis of an ST focus and a lot of other mechanicals have been stolen from the focus st parts bin. 4 wheel drive system is a haldex clutch exactly same as the Audi interior comes in full leather privacy glass and every toy known to man, full sat nav reversing camera, you think of it and it's on there. Couple of negatives are space in the rear seas could be a bit tight with 5 up, gearlever dash mounted as c -max and leaves the gear lever in a strange position in 6th, Fuel economy guage never dropped below 44 mpg. This was a good all rounder at a good price but trade in on Subaru worst of all dealers

5. Mercedes ML 280 CDi standard £34,300
Well this one did not suprise me, the build quality and metal thickness might have improved over the 1999 - 2000 years cars but the drive certainly has not. Has the body roll and turbo lag of a cross Channel ferry, this car would put hours on my journeys when travelling B roads. Good build quality nice cockpit and good driving position poor performance and to up spec it with options would cost a fortune still not for me I'm afraid.

So far if I were to put them in a league table it would be

1. Ford Kuga (Just pipping the Audi because of price)
2. Audi Allroad
3. Landrover Freelander
4. Mercedes ML280 CDI
5 Subaru Forester

I missed an obvious choice from my list which was the Volvo XC 70 along with Jeep and the Mitsubishi Shogun, I plan to test these later in the week so will repor back then.

Thing that shocked me most was the trade in value of the subaru

Which is a 2004 Ouback and cost £26k new the offer were £5,700 - £6,500 but it does have 81,000 on the clock

Not worth selling the outback privately?

Yeah think thats the plan now, OK mileage is high but full service History (as you'd expect on a 2 year old car) and its in good shape interior fine black leather unmarked, will geta valuation and get it in Auto trader

Would a VW Tiguan or Q5 when/if its out float the boat.

I have to admit I am taken with some VW group products.

Excellent post. I will be making similar choices when my 202 dies. However I will buy second hand.

I got two suprises reading this:

1) The negative about the Subaru diesel. They've had 10 years to develop this boxer diesel! Maybe the dealer is telling porkies - he just wants to sell what he's got?

2) Thought the Audi Quattro system was full-time 4WD with 3 differentials? Much more expensive than Haldex systems, and Quattro would be better for towing (e.g. up a steep wet pier with 1 ton of boat).

I'd be very tempted to get it on eBay at £10,999 ish and see if you get any bites, it certainly looks good value compare to others on offer even with the mileage as high as it is.

At that price you might be offered £9,500 or so which is a big chunk of change over the trade in values.

Don't put it up for auction, stick it on a buy it now with best offers....

I sold my Range Rover on Ebay for £15000, Merc offered me £10500 for it, it too had high mileage and they would only go by the book.

I'd be careful of overvaluing it in the current climes. You could be left with a depreciating asset and high VED charges looming.

Wisebuyers valuation for 80k miles 04 plate.
Retail: £7,820
Private Good: £6,310
Private Average: £5,420
Private Poor: £4,600
Part Exchange: £5,830
Trade: £5,559

I'm confused by the age of your car though.

Subaru have never been any good at holding value, a bit like Saab, having said that 25% on a four year old car with 80k on is pretty good in reality.
