timing chain tensioner

done compression test and readings were 27-28 bar on all cylinders, autodata says compression should be between 18 and 35 bar. so engine is good.
check cams and crank for timing alignment and there spot on.

checked timing chain tensioner and that looked and felt ok.

now looking at the pump.:wallbash:

adjusted pump today and knock has 99% dissapeared, you can only just still hear it in the background but its a soft noise.
Advanced it using the adjustment screw until it stopped knocking. Dont know by how many degrees, i just used my ear. The pump wont be far away from being fully advanced.
There is now a very slight whirring noise coming from the pump.
Open the oil filler cap and the distinctive metallic knocking has gone, you can only hear the chain, cams and diesel noise.
My dad took the car for a run and said that it feels a lot more powerful, as soon as you your foot down the power is instant. It wasnt like that before. He also said that when you release the throttle and coast to a stop, the engine feels like its pulsing/chugging like it is intermittantly getting fuel.
Have i done the right thing by adjusting the pump? in my mind it was the last thing on the list of possibilities. Will it cause damage? i did mark it prior to adjustment in case it needs to go back.
It has proved, that the knocking is caused by a fuel / pump / timing issue, and not mechanical.
Could the pump have jumped a tooth, that first morning when it started badly?
Whats likely to go wrong inside the pump? Sticky valve?

My dad is going to keep an eye on it and run it for a couple of days, then i will return the pump to its original position to see how it runs.
