To accept or not to accept. That is the question.

If you can get a new one for that do you mean painted and fitted? If so what are Mercedes playing at? Are they just plucking numbers out of thin air? After all 30% of a made up number is completely meaningless.

All the more reason to push for 100% contribution from MB!

Then they can invent whatever figure they like for the job, but you'll be paying 0% of it....

They are not plucking figures from thin air, by the way. They are calculating what the job will really cost them, then by simple mathematics, getting that figure to 30% of the figure they are quoting you. Thereby costing them, in real terms, nothing.

I wondered what that £700 actually was. A private customers quote, a cost price quote or some highly inflated ballpark figure to do just that.

I think I will be rejecting their offer but Im not sure the best way to do it so that I dont shut to many doors should it develop into a serious problem.

Thanks. Does he have a registered company or is it more of a hobby of his?

2006. 30,300miles. Full service history (on ASSYST) - 2 stamps at a dealer and 1 at a Specialist.

Personally I dont see how Clive or anyone can give a 5yr warranty that it wont rust after a sandblast and repaint? The reason for the rust is the corrugated door seam so the chance of it happening again is high, unless you fit a new tailgate with the smooth seam which were fitted from 2007 onwards.

A new tailgate is about £550 without a windscreen or any other bits.

Thanks but I was wondering if it was a recognised established business. i.e. 4 years down the line is he going to have disappeared?

I have just noticed two rust spots on the outside of the tailgate in two different locations.

I think leaving it and hoping that the rust on the inside wont develop isnt going to be an option now.

I have found some new style tailgates for £150 how much should I expect to pay for fitting and painting?

I still find it an incredulous situation that you are having to deal with issue.

Anyone would think it was a MK4 Escort.

What region are you based in?

West Yorkshire.

It is unbelievable. I really like that car but have to say I am getting fed up of having to repair it rather than getting on and enjoying it.

Just out of curiosity when in South East are you? Im originally from Sevenoaks.

Do you have motor legal expenses cover with your motor insurance?

I wonder if it might be worth a call in to them and run this whole sorry saga past them. And send them these photos.

MB, of course, are bound to claim that they are stone chips. What you need to do is take more photos, inside and out, date stamped (to show they were taken on the same day) and present them.

If there is corrosion on the inside, and specifically if it is worse than what you see on the outside, then it should prove inside-out corrosion which they like to claim is covered by their thin veneer of a warranty.

If there is no corrosion on the inside at these points, then it proves that they are indeed stone chips...
