From the Home Office web site......What's up with the modern car thief? Not a decent car in sight!!

The top ten stolen cars were identified by analysing 2005 theft data from the Police National Computer database, as well as information on the numbers of cars on the road provided by the Driving Licence Authority.

In order, the cars reported stolen most often in 2005 were:

Vauxhall Belmont
Vauxhall Astra Mk2
Ford Escort Mk3
Austin/Morris Metro
Vauxhall Nova
Ford Orion
Rover Metro
Austin/Morris Maestro
Austin/Morris Montego

Ford Fiesta Mks1, 2 and 3

This has made me sad for owning a car that no one wants to steal:(

Malcolm

Speaking as a retired AA patrol thats exactly the list I would expect all those cars are easy to effect entry easy to deal with steering locks and finally easy to hotwire. The majority are nicked for joy riding or committing further crime. The professional car thieves that are going to nick your Merc or other high end motor are goin to do your house get your Merc keys from the hall table and dissapear into the night

P.S. Malcolm don't believe for one minute that noone wants it

That and the fact you can use just about any type of key to steal one of those...

The belmont is a mk2 astra saloon!

My first car was a Nova, which is on the list.

Just got it home when best mate arrives for a gander. Key in the ignition, and spare still in the ashtray where previous owner put it so I wouldn't forget to take it with me.

Best mate looks around the outside, hops into drivers seat, says stuff like "nice init", opens the drivers door, lifts the outside handle, and pushes the lock. A slow motion dive, shouting in public information broadcast style "NNNNNNNNoooooooo" had no effect as he closed the door.

Called the dealer. "Help" I said. "Certainly we'll send someone now" they said. "Great" I said. Chap turns up and said "Look away now", and then immediately said "OK done". It involved a steel ruler, and about 3 seconds of effort - and the door was open. And that was when the car was relatively new!!

Cost me £35, but fortunately not a friendship. Still best mates now.

How many Fiesta Mk 1s, Maestros, Montegos, Metros and Orions were still even on the road in 2005??

My mk2 astra was stolen. Two days later (probably exactly) I got a phonecall from the police at 2am: "we've found your car".

I called directline's breakdown service and a bloke turned up at about 3am to move the car to a secure compound, I was staking the car out around the corner in another car, armed with an umbrella in case the thieves came back!

I had to buy a couple of new locks, steering column, cowling etc and those parts were fitted by a local garage, £250ish. At some point in the 2 days while the car was stolen they had a flat tyre and had to replace it! They lost the toolbox, the old wheel/tyre and a couple of floormats in the process mind! I bought a wheel and tyre for £5 and a toolkit for £3 from a breaker in Bury. The bits came from a wrecked Belmont with tyre pressures about 50% more than they should have been!
