On the basis that you cant please everyone it's let the people speak time.

4 Possible dates to got to Torquay, those going vote for a preferred date or dates and the majority carries it. Democracy in action.

John is very flexable apart from the last week in July where he has other commitments

Assuming all dates suit the person we are visiting -- John????
I did check with John and as Ian says, he's flexible which is why the weekend of the 31st is missing from the poll.
Does the "we are visiting" imply you're coming Brian ?? :D :D

It's looking like we have a clear winner, but can one of the admin guys tell me why the votes so far add up to 136.36%

I guess because it's a multiple choice poll, some people selected more than one date on which they are available.

guys - you're going to be so cross!! But I've just got back into work after being off last week and we can't make the 16/17th - I didn't know but Nige is away all the previous week with work so he won't have seen the kids and he'll be worn out as it is, so a jaunt to Torquay is out I'm afraid. :( :(

I'm so very sorry - especially to you John. :(

Thanks very much indeed for letting us know. I hope you all have a nice time.

Dates

Just a thought - it might be worth settling on a final date for travellers as hotels will be busy at this time of year.

Although I have no involvement in the trade, these hotels are worth trying, they are in the upper mid range. There are also hundreds of B&Bs and smaller hotels (naturally enough).

The Toorak http://www.tlh.co.uk/pages/accommod...sp&left=left_toorak.asp&main=toorak_hotel.asp
Note The Toorak is part of a complex of four hotels: http://www.tlh.co.uk/index.htm

The following are all Three Star:

The Gleneagles http://www.hotel-gleneagles.com/ (the original Fawlty Towers - under new management)

The Livermead Cliff http://www.livermeadcliff.co.uk/index.asp (Dickie Bird stays here)

The Livermead House http://www.livermead.com/

The Two Livermeads are virtually opposite each other, The Gleneagles has the worst parking (I think)

John, please add any thoughts here.

Hi MikeL,
As we both accept, hotels do indeed start to fill up this time of year. What is embarrassing though is the prices they tend to charge. The nearest hotels are either, The Palace, or Gleneagles!! ;) ;) I smile at the thought of the latter because it is the location that inspired Fawlty Towers.

There are numerous smaller hotels, bed and breakfast properties in Babbacombe Road, or on the approaches to Torquay.

I would recommend in the strongest terms that anyone that does come, travels via Teignmouth\Shaldon thus avoiding the bottleneck of getting into Torquay. If this route is accepted, there are some small nice family run Bed and Breakfast places on the outter reaches of Teignmouth Road (the quality lowers, the nearer you get to the town centre :o :o shouldn't really say that ;) )

Grav has talked about camp sites! The only one I 'was' aware of for Torquay is\was out on what we call the ring road at I believe Widdecombe Farm????

For those wondering whereabouts in Torquay I live, it is best described as either Wellswood, Ilsham or Babbacombe??? For the fishing types, or others, I would suggest you look up Hope's Nose, and that will give you a very good idea of the area. (You are NOT allowed to take\remove any of the white gold that is to be found in the rocks) ;)

If I can be of further help PLEASE do not hesitate to ask, but I have been out of touch for a number of years. I do however have Yellow Pages with its huge list of B & B's or hotels.

The Toorak is indeed an excellent hotel, but it is right in the heart of hotel land and it does have a very busy night club which you may, or may not appreciate.

We are really looking forward to meeting any that make this very long journey and hopefully it will be a memorable occassion.

Take care,
John
