Hi, I just bought a new E-Class ( 55-plate ) with Comand and understand you can unlock the DVD so my children can watch whilst in motion.
Can anyone help with the sequence to access the engineering mode on the Comand.
Thanks,
Mark

Here's the deal .... we can only help you if you don't blame us should anything go pear shaped and your insurance company cancels your policy after the fact.

Are you sure that your kid cant live with an iPOD movie ?

Absolutely assured - no comeback. And they got i-pod shuffles instead !!

initial menu:

whilst radio is on, hold down for 3 seconds:

mute end_call SERV

to add more menus:

hold down for 3 seconds:

Try this one

Doesn't work on the COMAND in my W220. :(

I can get into engineering mode OK but can't enable the extra options. Anybody know of any other key combinations I could try?

I'm not particularly bothered about enabling the front screen because I have a rear screen to keep the 'little darlings' entertained but being able to change the region code on the DVD would be nice.

It only works on the latest wide screen COMANDS on the W220 -after 2004 I think

Hi, I have figured out how to access the hidden menu's on my E-Class but a friend of mine has tried the same key functions but it won't work on his - any idaes please ?? He has a C-Class registered June 2004.
Thanks

Just as an aside. Mercedes-Benz has instructed ALL dealerships not to repair under warranty ANY COMAND that has been tampered with. Playing with the engineering codes can muck up numerous very necessary parts of this brilliant, very expensive piece of equipment.

It is admirable saying there will be no come basck on the person that modifies the system, but if you kill someone will you hold up your hands and admit in a court of law that you were watching the DVD.

Everyone, but everyone and their dog ALWAYS states it will ONLY be for their children and they will NEVER watch it. The funny thing is whenever I have seen pictures that folks have taken when they want to demonstrate it. They usually show films that are perhaps not best suited for children. One that I recall was Alien, but most were of a similar nature.

surely with an e class. you want the children safely in the back. then get the screens in their for them. and an MB dealer will get that working as thats the safest bet! its also legal!

it also costs money.

mind you, I'm not condoning playing DVDs whilst driving.

I'd also question the likelihood of MB getting away, in court, with refusing to honour a warranty claim on e.g. an engine fault, because they can show that the customer has enabled DVDs in motion. Especially when MB make said modification easy to do. why don't they make these things only adjustable by e.g. Star?

Hi Calum,
A thousand apologies for not making myself clear. The service bulletin only relates to problems with COMAND that has been caused by entering the Engineers Menu.

This menu is there for knowledgeable folks to carry out certain tasks, not car owners who play about pressing buttons in an experimental fashion. There have evidently been a number of claims for defectives systems which have been a result of owners playing with something they know nothing about?

Sorry for the confusion,
John

yup, that makes sense, although I still wonder whether that would hold up, legally speaking. I'm drawing a distinction between ending up with a toasted COMAND, needing a warranty replacement, and ending up with silly settings, needing someone sensible to come and fix it.
Unless they specfically forbid it, in the warranty paperwork, I wonder if they might be on risky ground there. Again, given how easy it is to do.
Still, it's all theoretical, at least for me :)
