Unstable PC and unable to run a back-up

Did you check if those services are running?

On a side note, I would consider ditching Norton in favour of a better AV product (not only is it very poor at protecting you in any way, it is also a resource hog and worse still it could also be causing this backup issue). You can lose Spybot as well as it stopped being useful a good few years ago now.

I could not see those services in the list.

Norton has, in my experience offered good protection over the last couple of years although I know Kapersky is well thought of by some, only one Trojan got through and Spybot found and removed it.

I store photos etc on a seperate drive. Write any keys down. That way if i need to reinstall its easy. No need for backups. I also use Hirens utility disc for cloneing drives. Its really quick and free.

Windows re-installed, most programs put back but unable to re-install Office because it is "an unsupported install", No problem there, just used Open Office.

Laptop, after a few tweaks and many, many re-boots is faster, more responsive and much more stable!

Thanks to all for the advice and PM's!
