So the iPad and phone have the same plug-in lead type USB charger.

As does my Panny camera and the TomTom from a PC USB port.

Q. Are all the different wall chargers compatible with all these differing recipients simply by swapping the lead? eg the Panny charger with the iPad or vice-versa and the iPhone from the PC?

.

They are all 5v but some devices require as much as 2amps and some as low as 0.5 amps.

Look at each charger you have and if you can read the really small writing it will tell you how much each bit of hardware requires.

Or, use Asus quick charge application.

Asus Ai Charger - Download

Asus devices (laptops, pcs, etc.) come with the designated usb port(s) charge enabled.
But most devices will work this app and have your iphone / ipad charged, whilst connected.

As well as the current rating mentioned by Sp!ke, it's worth mentioning that Apple devices require one of the USB signal pins to be set correctly by the device supplying power, otherwise the Apple device thinks its not connected to a power source. PC's and Apple chargers work as do many others, but some (e.g. some Sony USB chargers) won't.

The current rating on a charger indicates the maximum current it can deliver, not what the device being charged requires. The charger doesn't "put out" the current on the rating panel, it supplies whatever the device takes, up to and even beyond its rating. Then things can get hot ;)

A charger marked 5V 500mA for example will safely deliver up to 500mA, and can be used on any 5 Volt device (special pins to make you buy an overpriced one notwithstanding) which demands less than 500 mA charging current.

Cheers :thumb:

I was also thinking (bad move! :wallbash:) of using the TomTom dock along with it's integral USB lead into a 12v-5v car ciggy adaptor rather than having the TT propped up on the dash (don't like sucker thingys on the screen). The TT seems to be charging OK from the iPad wall charger which is 2.5amp output.
