Hello there needing some advice, have a E240 1998 have a warning diaplayed on dash oil sensor defective, replaced it but still have same problem, only had car for two weeks also noticed oil filler cap has a lot of sludging ,wonder if these two things are linked, car has 128k miles and full dealer history, plan to use mobil 1 as reccomended by a lot of members, how would one get rid of this sludge build up, Had e280 124 chassis before this one and never had any oil problems, always used full synthetic from new, engine was always clean on the inside Have i made the wrong move ? hope not , any advice would be nice. Plan to post some pics only i dont know how to get them across :

Try an engine flush? or buy some cheap FS oil, change and run around for a week and then flush and drop the oil and replace with Mobil1.

Thanks will do that, do you think it would be ok to run around with flushing solution in for a week

No!!! dont drive around with the flushing solution in! If i was you, i would change thw oil with some cheap Fully synth for a week and then drop the flushing agent in, run for 15 minutes idling or so and then drop in mobil1.

A flushing agent is not a substitute for oil and i think you should never drive round with it in.

Can anyone else comment on this?

ok i will stick to manufacturers reccomendations,Been reading some horror stories on this engine due to gumming up, total failure, also read that MB warrants engines up to 10 years /150k miles for this problem, wonder if this is true, scared to drive now just waiting for something to happen

Paul, there's most likely nothing wrong.

Stick with a quality fully synth oil and you'll be fine. The reason the engines had problems was that MB USA mistakenly told their dealers to use mineral oil with these engines and the oil couldnt stand up to the extended service intervals hence the sludging. This extended warranty is only in the US for cars that have been serviced with the wrong oil.

It is completely normal to see a bit of emulsion on the oil filler cap on the M112/M113 engine during cold weather. The cap sits on a plastic housing slightly away from the engine and as a result is cooler. This acts as a condensor and so a slight emulsion will form in cold weather due to water condensation. They all do it.

My suggestion would be to stop worrying and enjoy your new car.

Wow feel so much happier reading that thanks, just priced mobi 1 what a shock £40 is this right, so that would be £9o for oil and filter change, do you have any thoughts on oil warning defective, renewed sensor still the same.

Is this the usual grey/white sludge or something more like a black gel?

black gel and a small amount of condensation, this black stuff looks like dryed up oil

water level ok, just finished working on car, heres what ive done removed the right hand rocker cover {small one on top of the full size rocker cover} and the amount of dried on crusty oil was allover it,totaly removed all of this vacumed away all of the loose bits near the timing chain area, refitted, put some engine flush in ran 4 half our dumped oil, refilled with cheap oil dumped that and filter, refilled with new oil and new filter now hoping this synthetic oil wont sludge up Dealer has been using duckhams and magnatec, dont know how good these oils are
