V6 CDI glow plug light ...

What gives the glowplug system the instruction to turn off - the light to extinguish on the dash before starting?
I have the W124 300D lamp that stays lit for perhaps 15 seconds whatever the temperature of the engine though the engine starts perfectly after 5 secs pre-heat.
I swapped the relay with a mate's with little difference so I guess perhaps there's some sensor that detects engine temperature that's gone West???

Thanks

Paul

does the glow plug light come on with ignition on but engine off, then once its gone out, you start the engine - does the light come back on at all?

if it doesnt come on with engine off but ignition at II and comes on when the engine is running, then you need to replace a dead glowplug.

It's actually been OK now since I replaced the end section of cable and plug - I will however, be replacing the rest of the harness.
The wiring to the inlet manifold switching system is all shorted out so can't be working properly and the engine temperature read-out has been down around 60C since I moved some of the harness under there too - I think replacement is a good option for another decade of fault-free motoring!

Thanks

Paul

yes the E300D wiring looms suffer from the usual degrading.... my 2 are the same, especially around the manifold flaps. dont know what difference in running fixing it would do....

i have a spare degraded loom which i planned (at some point, probably wont until i have to), build up a new wiring loom myself based on it.

Well, I am looking forward to having the full 130hp+ under the foot I have to say....!
It's been great so far all in all though and apart from a few niggles, I'm very happy with the car - it came back 1770km full to the tailgate + the two of us in 18 hours including ferry and used no oil, did about 36mpg and actually was actually less tiring than the 500 with it's harder ride on the same journey.... if only there was cruise control on this particular one! A retrofit possibly??

Paul

yes it can be retrofitted.

I'm having the same issue at the moment with the glow-plug light statying on for a minute or so after start-up....I've booked my car in & taking into MB later this week.

May I ask, are glow plugs usually covered under warranty if the car still has warranty? Or will MB charge for this replacement?

I doubt that glow-plugs would qualify for a warranty claim, probably considered consumables. Perhaps MB is a bit OTT for a glow plug change, although the STAR diagnosis will tell them exactly which one, but it will all cost. My indie did one in 20 minutes, with a star check, for £47, any competent mechanic can change them, it needs care to remove them - no excessive force. Would be interested to know the outcome and cost.

Finally got round to booking the Vito in for this today, no. 3 plug failed ... quoted £129 all-in (main dealer).

Having had a quick look it's pretty tight in there so I didn't really fancy having a go myself. Would be a much easier job on most other M-Bs I think.
