A quick q guys when I started my car today after two days the glow plug light stayed on after the engine began to run for 20 seconds. However when I turned the car off and left it for a couple of hours and restarted it this problem did not occur. I have noticed that when I start the car after a couple of days the glow plug light stays on after the engine is running however otherwise this fault does not happen. Also no readings on my ODB scanner any suggestions.

Glow plugs fail on these engines as commonly as any other diesel.
The glow control units ares a very very common failure on the 642 engine.
Can it not be read by star rather than an OBD2 scanner

allow 2-3 hours labour + parts . l wouldn't be stressed about just yet .there should be a bit more life in the plugs.

No its not so bad. 1.5hrs to change the lot and control unit as well!!!

well i can officially confirm the glow plugs has gone now next step is deciding what to do next. I have the tier one warranty and I plan on taking the service care plan out on my car will either of these cover the glow plugs?

i think i got mb warrington to replace the faulty glow plug under warranty shall keep this updated

My former Sprinter had the glowplug light on for around 40,000 miles.

The light would come on at start-up. I could then drive 100, miles and re-start the van within 10, minutes and the glowplug light would still be there (it always disappeared after a couple of minutes). I had it checked a couple of weeks after the light started to show and it turned out to be the sensor and I never got around to replacing it.

I sold the van at 172,00 miles and the glowplugs were fine.
