My present tax disc is valid till end of this month.

My new tax disc has just arrived in the post today, 12 months valid till end of May 2012.

I am going on holiday 25th of this month, back in the UK 10th of next.

Car will be parked on the road.

What is the correct option for displaying tax disc.

1. Remove old disc and put new one in before holidays.

2. Display both discs during holiday, remove old one after I return.

TIA.

As far as I'm aware, once a tax disc has been issued it can be displayed. Although it's technically only valid for 12 months, it doesn't have a specific start date as such. (Having said that, I'd keep the old one for the time being in case of any query as to whether it was taxed between 25th and 31st May.)

Taken from DVLA website

"Displaying your tax disc

Your vehicle tax disc must be displayed on the passenger side (kerb side) of the vehicle’s windscreen. If there’s no windscreen or you have a motorcycle or sidecar, you should display the tax disc on the kerb side of the vehicle.
A current tax disc must be displayed on the vehicle it was bought for. If you buy a new tax disc before your current tax disc expires, you should not display the new one until the old one has expired. The new tax disc is only valid from the first day of the month you have taxed from. The maximum penalty for failure to display a current tax disc is £200. The tax disc can not be transferred between vehicles.
If you use the electronic vehicle licensing service or tax by post at the end of the month, there’s now an exemption for not displaying a tax disc. This exemption covers the first five working days of the month to allow time for the new disc to arrive in the post. While you are still waiting for your tax disc you will need to display your current tax disc. The exemption only applies if applications are made before the current tax disc or SORN expires."

Consequently I'd be looking at displaying both tax discs although you could argue the authorities can check online to see if a car is taxed or not. I'm sure someone on here will have the definitive answer though. Enjoy the holiday:D

Your Tax disc is not valid until the date it begins, so displaying it beforehand may land you with a fine.

Asker's Comment: I actually e-mailed the DVLA with this question, which is probably what I should've done in the first place. They confirm that you should NOT swap your old tax disc for the new one until the old one expires. Thanks, all.

Looked around on the net.

The above reminds me of when I asked the DVLA many moons ago.

They told me, the correct way is remove old disc at 24.00 from correct location on windscreen, then apply new disc at 00.01 as the month changes, they agreed it appears unreasonable, but that is watt they told me.

Maybe I should just save time and money, don't tax/insure/mot ????? not me, but I can see why so many people do....

Cheers all....

As soon as my tax disc drops through the letter box, it goes on the car. You'd have to be seriously unlucky to get done for this.

if in doubt display both, though personally I would put the new one in

I would display both, better than all the aggravation of trying to prove afterwards that you had a valid Tax Disk when a few days before the end of the month some numpty traffic warden slaps a ticket on your screen.

Just display the new disc .Highly unlikely that a tax disc expiring in 12 months time is going to be noticed , and a simple check would reveal that your car is currently taxed anyway. At very worst , you could only be guilty of "failure to display", and I think you will find that plod relies on his in -car gadgetry to detect untaxed vehicles ( when hes not busy polishing his helmet).

Display both. What does it cost you?

Incidentally... I had the same problem but with the Council's Residents Parking Permit. Council told me quite clearly that the new permit is valid only from the day it starts - not from the day of issue, so I should display both. Even though the permit does not have start date displayed on it - their is a start date stored on the council's computer. I would imagine this also goes for Tax disc, though I do not know this for fact.
