Over the last few months my CLK has been getting more and more smokey. I mean really smokey. When I accelerated there was such a cloud of black smoke I couldn't see the car behind.
Firstly I cleaned the EGR valve. OMG![Eek! ](https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/joypixels/assets/8.0/png/unicode/64/1f631.png)
This job really upset the long haired General as I managed to walk the black stuff over 3 of the carpets!
No improvement! :fail
So then I removed, cleaned and checked the pipe from the turbo to the intercooler and the one before the EGR. No splits.
No improvement! :fail
Next I moved on to the MAS. I removed the pipe section just before the EGR, removed the MAS and cleaned with MAS cleaner. (It was filthy). I cleaned the pipe to as this was very oily. Next I removed the one near the air box and also the pipe from the air box to the turbo.
The pipe was seriously oily but only from where the breather pipe connected. In fact the inlet to the turbo was very oily and black too. (I tried to take a pic but there is not much room).
I cleaned all this up.
I figure the oil separator is not doing its job so I decided to take it apart.
Inside a found a rubber diaphragm which was split. (170,000 miles takes it's toll)
After replacing the oil separator I can report success.
No smoke at all.![Thumb :thumb: :thumb:](/styles/mbclub/smilies/thumb.gif)
I figure over time the oil separator fails and lets too much oil vapour into the inlet. This condenses through out the inlet tract and in the intercooler and gums everything up. In particular the MAS.
Next I need to clean the intercooler as that is bound to be full of oil and not working well at all.
I think I will also clean the MAS every 6 – 12 months.
The best news is the effect on the MPG.![Thumb :thumb: :thumb:](/styles/mbclub/smilies/thumb.gif)
When it was smoking I was getting around 55 -58 MPG on my commute.
On Tuesday I got 65 MPG (I don't really believe this but it has shown a marked improvement)
I think cleaning the MAS was the easiest job and I wish I had done it first.
