Can any one give me a quick run down on the things to check?

It's a 94 E220 estate...

Many thanks,

Simon

Rear self levelling suspension, rear door closure, broken springs, cylinder head gasket, front disc wear, ignition misfire---coils or ECU , all body electrics work, at least 2 working remotes for alarm/central locking, service history+MOTS documentation , smooth operation of gearbox changes up and down-reasonable quick to switch from drive to reverse without jolts, I,VE PROBABALY MISSED SOMETHING BUT CAN'T THINK AT THE MOMENT.

Rusty front wheelarches, non-working window winders, clunky rear suspension over bumps, non-working rear window washer & wiper, slipping / banging gearshifts, no ABS or SRS light on startup, engine bay oil leaks, scuffed / cracked / chipped bumper centres, dinked rear quarter panels, cracked rear lights, rust round RCL locking LEDs and aerial cutout, badly-repaired accident damage, Cat C and D cars, short MOTs, cars with no history, worn tyres, cars that pull badly and/or have the steering wheel misaligned, cars that wander at speed or creak over speed humps, trashed wheel trims, kerbed alloys, worn engine mounts, worn driver's seat backrest edge, cigarette burns & nicks in cloth upholstery, bad idle / won't pull cleanly, trashed cargo net and non-working a/c and cruise control

That should keep you busy

Weren't there certain models W124 with potential degrading wiring harness problems as well?

Seems a lot of things to check on the car. However one of the best things to check is the seller! Do they tick all the right boxes. Do they appear open and honest about the car and its history. Do they offer to let you see all the documentation. Do they look as if they have spent money on the car or have they run it into the ground? Are they happy to let you have an accompanied test drive. Is the car licenced and in daily use.Have they a good reason for selling if they aren't a dealer. If they are a dealer are they offering any warranty etc etc.

Thanks guys, I'm off to see the car shortly armed with all of suggestions.
Will let you know what sort of state its in...

Thanks again,

Simon

What brilliant, EXCELLENT advice. short, sharp and to the point. I am sure the reader is extremely grateful and can use these points as a bargaining chip, but don't forget you are looking at a 124. It is not a new 211, you must expect to see signs of age, BUT these cars can age with maturity or be neglected. This excellent thread has highlighted ALL the faults and I would expect any vehicle to have some, but the fewer the better. :)

Good luck

regards
John

Ok, just got back from seeing the car. Overall a very nice car for the year and Mileage 200k +

It's had a Headgasket done and a recent tailgate wash wipe motor.
The ABS light is present from startup for a couple of mins then goes off. The gear shift is very smoth, far far better than my old ML at half the mileage.

All the windows worked and the tires were good.

No Leather or Air Con.

Overall a nice car, no signs of rust apart from the rear ariel and under the bonnet itself (a few of the edges were showing surface rust)

So what does one pay for a 200k 14 year old 124 in a nice colour in resonable condition?

If the ABS lamp is taking time to go off,, but does go off, then the battery is probably the suspect item here giving the Lamp on until the alternator has pulled the voltage up.

I sold mine for £350 in the end for a 1993 220 te estate 170k on the clock, not quite the same but may jelp otherwise take a look on ebay at completed listinfgs or on autotrader and get rough idea.

Based on what you have said, quite difficult, but somewhere between 400 and 800 quid I would say, depending on length of mot etc.

I would possibly go slightly higher but almost impossible to say without seeing the car . What sort of service history if any, has it got? What's the asking price and colour?

As a guide, I recently sold my '93 200te 16-valve, 7-seater, blue-black, no aircon, cloth, head gasket done, very good condition, FSH, 175,000 miles, years mot, for £1495.
Note that the 4-cylinder multivalves are not immune to engine wiring loom problems. Less common than in the 280 and 320, but not unheard of.

Make sure there was no excessive play in the steering wheel, as the old MB steering boxes are known to get very loose with age, could be a problem MOT time.....
