Someone will be along shortly to give you a link for a site that you can enter your VIN into.

I have removed your VIN from your post, as it is unwise to post it in full on a public forum.;)

I believe the correct link is this:
http://www.service-and-parts.net/
Subscribe (and pay) and you'll get the info in a secure way.

This one is free, but you have to trust some Russian guys (I believe they are safe, they've got millions of VINs to pick up one from :) )
http://www.mbclub.ru/mb/vin/?lng=eng
But not all, specifically new cars shown.

Can try PM someone at the forum too.

polosbruno has obtained the info from the "other" forum. (who didn't remove the VIN)

More fool them:rolleyes:
200 w203's with the same details on by the end of the week then:crazy:

Just to put things into perspective.
I need to know the origin of the car for registration purposes ONLY.
In order to register the car in the country I am I need to provide details that the car was first registered in a European Country. This is why I specified that I needed to know the dealer from which the car was ordered. As was correctly mentioned before, the VIN is easily visible on most mercs so I can't see what all the fuss is about.Besides, the only reason that I requested the info in my first post is the fact that mercedes can give me all the details in under 30 seconds but have told me that it could take up to 2 weeks to release the details!!!!

P.S They have to say this otherwise how will they be able to cover the fact that they are charging me 50 GBP just to give me the details which I received in 3 mins.....

Can you not read it through that little window on the windscreen? you could get the numberplate details at the same time.
Anyway I expect that the IP address is logged in case of naughtiness, and you have kept a copy of that VIN just in case ?

I would expect that if anyone was going ringing that they may be a touch more subtle but hey , nothing is subtle these days.

Did MB ask you for proof of ID , or just the dough?

Yes,I have provided proof of ownership. Its just the fact that I can not understand why I should be charged the money when it is available on their database.

...and this is all just to prove the origin and first reg of the vehicle for the appropriate reg division to register it...

You mean we should get their spare parts for free when those anyway are on their shelf? Getting the info from the database is a minor task but building and maintaining the info isn't exactly cheap. The price you mentioned may be a bit high though, but I cannot see why it should be free. They also take the responsibility that the data is valid.

Diesel, comparing build specs on a piece of paper to spare parts on a shelf doesn't compute.

I've asked several different MB parts departments to run build spec sheets on cars I was thinking of buying from private parties & they've done it with no charge, no ID required & no questions asked.

They know that VINs & reg numbers are effectively in the public domain (anyone can walk up to any car & see / photograph both) & the web is full of VIN de-coder sites. The Russian MB club sit is more detailed than the MB printouts I've been given & a very handy resource.

True.

I'd certainly print the standard datacard no questions asked since it just includes info on the car (options, build date and so on) but I'd probably ask for some ID if they wanted the whole nine yards with owner info and all the rest of it.

Either ID or a note from the current owner with some info i could match to the database to prove it was legit.

No way should anybody charge for this.

Come on, of course I was exaggerating with the reference to part numbers but even the time of the parts guy isn't for free, one may do it with the intention to show good service, and expect a customer come next time. I would prefer the parts guy serve me instead of using his time for free for someone else. If he had nothing else to do, why not give it for free then but nobody can assume they should do it.

Considering the Russian site, it does not have any single detail more than the MB files, after all, it is stolen MB data (I cannot afford being that picky, I'm using and referring it often). But try a print from that site for a document to register a car, I would like to see the face of the officer. Even if DansSlk was so polite to print the data card, even his printout would not be sufficient.

People complain elsewhere MB shop prices, that is justified to me but not any more if you expect them do an official proof of car origin for free.

Note, I did not consider the VIN and data card info any secret (I've said it before, but I've also said I would not post VINs of my cars), I'm not complaining someone giving out that info, I just don't accept the view that that one can expect getting the info for free.

I have never mentioned that I expect to get the info for free.
I just thought that it would be nice if you could obtain these details direct from mercedes with not so much hassle

You did not, must have been someone else, or at least I got the impression, but this is getting off topic and does not help you (just to confirm that you did not deserve any of my "complaints".
