Seem to have trouble loading programs and adding hardware to my new laptop, which is running on Vista.
It won't let me put on Quickbooks, a DVB-T stick or google earth.
Anyone else having problems with Vista?
Wish I'd stuck to XP now and am seriously thinking about taking this one back.

No probs here with Vista, in fact Google Earth came as part of the package.

Try using the Compatability Wizard

Where do I find that?
Having used XP for ages, I am struggling with Vista.

What rights have you got with the account your logged in as?

I assume you have the right to install things...

you wont have a grounds for a refund unless you were explisitly* told that said software will run its somthing you should have checked before purchaseing the machine or unless the item is faulty

returning somthing because you dont like the os or because the software dont work (unless you were told it does) just doesnt happen unless the store is feeling nice

unfortunatly the compatability of your software should have been checked prior to buying a machine with windows vista.

probs not what you wanted to hear but thats the breif the customer services staff at most if not all of the high street electrical retailers

oh and have you tried turning it off and on again.................

only joking
make sure that you are logged in with the correct privilages and if that fails still then its a compatability problem

Administrator rights (I think:o )
Have spen most of the day trying to put the freeview stick on here.
I had to go into command prompt and enter: bcdedit -set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS, as advised on a site for the stick, but it still won't work.

The salesman told me I would have no problems with Quickbooks, but Intuit (the makers) say it doesn't work on Vista.

if the saleman said it will work and it doesnt then refund away however their may be compatability patches out but if there isnt then refund all the way as the product is classed as being miss sold

Use the built in partition manager in Vista to shrink the Vista partition and then load windows XP on the remaining space. Its all explained here. You will need an XP installation disc tho. You should end up with a dual boot computer and you can run your apps from the XP partition. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/wind...on-your-pre-installed-windows-vista-computer/

I have to say I havn't tried this myself but maybe some of the resident IT experts can comment?

I'm running Quickbooks 2006 Accountant on Vista Business with absolutely no problems whatsoever, have been since January when the advance Vista copies came out. You could always try running it in XP compatability mode, see if that makes any difference. I'm also running Google Earth without any issues. Both were already on my laptop when I ran the upgrade to Vista, don't know if this makes any difference.

The Official Quickbooks take is -

QuickBooks 2006 is supported to run on Vista if using R7 or higher. R7 will be made available through the QuickBooks Automatic update feature in the week commencing the 26th March and contains:

Vista support for QuickBooks 2006

  • Fixed crash on installation
  • Fixed fonts error message on installation
  • Added new information message if opening QuickBooks for the first time as a standard user
  • Fixed navigators to ensure they appear correctly when run as a standard user
  • Included a new PDF converter (used when emailing Invoices) that works with Vista
This update is available on CD from 27th March 2007 by calling Intuit Customer Services on 0845 606 2161.

QuickBooks 2004 & 2005 are not supported to work with Vista. QuickBooks may work but to ensure QuickBooks runs on Vista you should upgrade to QuickBooks 2006

Microsoft are great at using us as there guinea pigs, i wont even consider vista until they've released a service pack to sort out it's shortcomings

Yes possibly, but people forget that on the old 90/10 rule you're getting 90% of the functionality at a (relatively! Vista is overpriced in this country) cheap price. To do the extra 10%, which I have no doubt Microsoft could do, would cost so much the software would be prohibitive to buy. Better to provide most of what people expect at a reasonable price and fix the problems, mostly minor, which arise. I've been using Vista Business for around 9 months now on my business laptop and apart from a tendency to swallow memory making an upgrade essential, and early delays getting drivers for some software like the mobile phone suite, a label printer, and the like, I cannot say I have any real complaints. In a lot of ways it is superior to XP, as you might expect. I've had more difficulty getting used to the Office 2007 'ribbon' which is not as intuitive as MS presumably thought it was, meaning occasional delves into the help to find out how to do odd little things like have a different header on the first page of a Word document.

I'm not sure there will be a service pack for Vista, updates are issued as and when things are fixed thus negating the need for a service pack.

Didn't Microsoft say when they issued XP service pack 2 that they could do all future updates automatically using the web and more importantly for Microsoft the Validation tool which means only registered users get upgrades?

Maybe they will do disk of cumulative update for IT managers but the home user doesn't need one.

However, if sales are low then I suspect they will issue one just to catch the late upgraders whop are sitting waiting for the pack :).

Grav, if you are having problems with any installers with vista, try right clicking on the .exe file and from the menu select "run as administrator". This seems to give the program's installer more priority.

Having used XP for ages, I am struggling with Vista.

Click START - Control Panel - Programs then under Program Features you will see "Use an older program with this version of Windows". Click the link and the Compatability Wizard starts

Went back to PCWorld and told them I was not happy with the laptop and that I was mis-sold it by the salesman.
It also now comes up with BOOTMGR is missing - press ctrl-Alt-Del to restart and that's all it will do.
The person in front of me had exactly the same laptop as well as the person 2 behind me.
SO, DO NOT BUY AN ADVENT 7204, as apparently, they get an average of 5 per day returned.
Refund with no fuss.
They then took me to the business section and I got a new higher spec laptop with XP PRO on it for less money and some other incentives thrown in free.
Laptop being delivered tomorrow morning.
Happy ending.

Glad to see a goo outcome chuck. My Vista has been great. I love it. Very reliable and very stable. Everything works up to now so no complaints at all.

Aparently the Dixons group are in trouble over vista with many many returns and computers they can shift because they are rtunning Vista.
