As new member I have taken a cursory look at what other members have said in relation to oil leaks and I have to say I am a little surprised( pleasantly it has to be said) that hardly anyone seems to report having problems of this nature. I have 1990 300TE-24v that has sprung what appears to be a significant oil leak. I had RCG replaced 3-4 months ago and HG replaced about 3-4 years ago at 120K. The car has now done 142k. The car has been serviced by same independent Mercedes specialist throughout. His assessment is that HG has gone again and the time has come to scrap the car. His reasoning being that I'd be better off putting the £1000 it would cost replacing the HG towards another car. Especially so given that this is well known weakness with this particular engine, or so he would have me believe.
The thing is I am torn between taking that advice at face value and disposing of the car and trying to save it if at all possible.
I would be grateful for any advice on how best to proceed.
Thank You in advance. FLC

What makes you think the H/G has gone ? Water in the oil ? Oil in the water ? Misfiring ?

A head gasket should last longer than 22k miles or 3-4 years IMHO. The fact that it's gone already suggests that something wasn't done properly on the job at the time?

Aside from this concern, when trying to establish whether it's worth doing the head gasket again - what's the rest of the car like? Body, interior, mechanicals - even tyres/brakes/exhaust/MOT etc.

If it's a clean car and in otherwise good nick - shop around for the head gasket repair. You should be able to get it done for less than £1000 IMHO, especially as you have previously paid these people to do it before only 22k miles ago..

What other car(s) would you be looking at as a replacement? If you do decide to move the old car on, post some pics/details up - one of us on here might be interested in it ;) :)

Agreed, £1000 for the HG is a little excessive IMHO, more like £500-600 I would have thought.

That engine is prone to head gaskets...

The reason is that MB created this engine very quickly to compete with BMW. They crammed in an extra two valves per cylinder and the result was a very narrow gasket..

When the gasket was done was the head skimmed?

Thank you to everyone for replying to this thread. Dealing with the responses I've had in no particular order I can state the following.
Save for creeping rust spot on front nearside wheel arch the car has no other rust on it. The spec is good: "sportline" version with usual "sportline" factory modifications, namely, smaller steering wheel, lowered suspension settings/stiffer s/absorbers and the leather which save for wear and tear on the driver's side bolster is near perfect.
Everything including cruise and electric driver's seat work, save for the air conditioning which needs a re-gas. I've had the gearbox reconditioned 25K ago and it works beautifully ( 5 speed variant).
When I bought The car I had the valve guides done, as well as replacing the headgasket which involved skimming the head.
In short I've tried to do everything maintenance-wise to keep the car for the long term.
As far as the leak itself is concerned I can say this. The car has hitherto always used oil. Prior to the leak I'd say problaby 1 litre every 500-1000 miles which I believe is perfectly acceptable and within acceptable limits given the age of the car.
Whenever the oil level would go down I would make sure it would be topped up- usually after a motorway run/ weekend getaway.
The driveway where I keep the car shows build-up of oil on the ground. Because I park the car in exactly the same place every day the build up of oil is quite noticeable. But this has not up until very recently bothered me. I appreciate that a lot of cars, and particularly old 6 cylinder mercs can and do leak and provided this is not excessive should not give unnecessary cause for concern. What makes the current situation different however is that I have noticed what looks like fresh oil, perhaps half a cup full on the ground under the car after having driven it. The leak seems to lie at the bulkhead end of the engine block. Its not AFT and its not break fluid; I am reasonably confident it is engine oil.
I can't say for certain because I haven't really driven the car for any length of time since this happened but the engine does not appear to be overheating....yet.
The oil pressure gauge reading remains unaffected 2-3, which is as it should be. There does not appear to be any oil in the coolant reservoir, and neither is there any creamy looking residue around the oil filler cap. So far the only problem seems to be that engine oil appears to be leaking from somewhere in the engine after the car has been driven.
Again, I would be interested to hear what anyone has to say about this. As before thank you in advance for taking the time and trouble to respond?
PS I'm not very familiar with this site, so as soon as I get a chance to take some pictures and find out how to post them I will.

Hmm, well, I could be wrong, but i dont think its your head gasket. Impossible to say without seeing the car just where its coming from, but i would definitely be seeking a second opinion.
