Is there much difference between the settings?
I know 1 is summer and the other winter, winter being longer gear changes and set off in second.

The main thing I have noticed, which is quite concerning, is, when I need to make hasty take off at junction etc. there seems to be to long a delay about a second? don't sound much but does make a difference (I'm no boy racer BTW)

I understand the switch contacts can get dirty, I could try switch cleaner.
I've read that post here.

This is my 1st Merc. and my first auto owning car:p , love it:)

Welcome to the joys of the auto lag :) They all (or most) seem to have this hence our support of the sprint booster which removes the lag. There's nothing wrong - it's normal.

PS - its Winter and Standard I believe.

If you know a prompt get away is required, a spot of left foot braking, then gently start to apply throttle 1 second before removing brake, winds the torque converter up nicely.

Untimatley you could try a full "brake stand" start, full throttle, wait for 4000rpm then take your left foot of the brake. Don't get too many of these out of one gearbox though.

But you do get a cracking figure 11 down the road..:D
