W/S212 front spring question.

I think you've missed a bit out where I've mentioned my e63 failed mot yesterday on a fractured/ broken spring so I'm after springs for the e63 vehicle as well as ( not the Bog standard w212) as you call it !

We will sort it I'm sure. I won't be ripped off either 😁

The (bog) standard vehicles springs have already been purchased. Waiting on delivery 🤘🏻

It's the MB main dealers that's charging that price. That's what they are for that E63 vehicle it seems across the board.
Mine were from a main MB dealer , just over a £100 each , for a car with AMG suspension , have you tried MB of Newcastle's Ebay shop ? That's where I get all of my OEM MB parts from.

What did you finally get for the 'bog standard'? I really can't think of my S212 E250 CDI AMG as a 'bog standard', but it is sort of catchy phrase. The car still turns heads and get many compliments regarding its like new appearance.

Just waiting on blasted parts now and coil spring compressor.

Bloody front center jack point abliterated first thing when raising the car luckily I had my car on the ramps, as it's so low I can't get the small trolley jack under. I'll need to get a new front jack mold. eBay I imagine?

Or Autodoc perhaps? Amazon has nice jack molds that fit the Mercedes jack points perfectly.

But it's stuff like that that take a big job and makes it huge. I had a Volvo come off the stands. Punched the fuel lines in two.

Do you think it's for the best I change the shock absorbers. As looking at the history I have, there is no sign they have been done. Will top mounts be ok would you say. Or best to look at them once I have been able to inspect them once stripped down?

Thanks

I highly recommend changing the shocks, upper mount with bearing and at least a new damper. I'm guessing your original lower seats are rubber. The new lower spring seats from Mercedes are steel and rubber. I you compare a new fully assembled strut to the old one, you will notice the upper mount is much more stiff. You have taken it all apart already. Renovate it completely. The driving feel will probably be a very positive shock. OEM Mercedes shocks can go 500K kilometers. That doesn't mean the performance hasn't vastly degraded. OEM are either Bilsteins or Sachs. Neither will disappoint you. Some people take pride in changing for a new car every 3 or 4 years. Some take pride in maintaining a vehicle like new for 20 to 30 years. I'm the latter. I did put in Carplay. 580 euro for Becker updates that are outdated the following day are worthless.

If I was to buy new shocks absorbers they come with a bottom spring seat on some units?

Are all top mounts interchangeable for the correct vehicle/strut assembly?

The top mount and bearing kit I used are Bilstein 12-305612. The shock was Bilstein 22-194091. The mount and bearing will fit any shock that fits the S212. While many cars have the spring sitting directly on the integrated shock spring cup, Mercedes uses an additional thin seat that acts both as a spring end stop and a noise control buffer. You will probably only find it at your dealer. The plastic piece that you should have found on top of your shock mount can be washed and reused. They don't show wear. The mount is not metal to metal. Again, another bit for noise control.

When I see the photo of your old shock, you have the plastic top piece and the bottom seat. Take that shock apart and give the bottom rubber seat a good scrubbing with liquid dish soap. If it's not cracked you can easily reuse it too. And piece 40 may also be reusable. That's another I had to source from Mercedes. At Mercedes I bought the bellows, dampers, seats, and top ring. 200 Euro. That's a lot for a few pieces of rubber. But they do have a star printed on them. :) I reused nothing but the bolts after a wire brushing.

It a gorgeous Belgian day. I have Foliac silver caliper paint. I should do it. The rear are so nice. The front are heat rusted. An hour per side and they could be beautiful.

Thanks for the advice, I will do, once I receive these fricking parts. Enjoy the lovely weather your receiving, and yes get busy with the car. Nothing like doing bits on a car, especially a Mercedes 🤘🏻😁

See my post #68 . Depending on mileage and how long you are going to keep the car doing the whole lot 'while you are in there' makes sense (to me) , if just putting a new spring on to squeeze a car through the MOT , no problem.

Drivers side done, passenger one on the bench ready for surgery. Jesus sweept, getting the holding down bolt/plate isnt easy, as them poxy spring compressors don't compress the spring enough. I'm getting there. 👍
