Hi! I've had a w123 230E for a while now that I got cheap. I was told it needed a new fuel distributor and it took me ages to find the right one (it's the old one with no electrical regulator). Finally got it fitted but the engine has more problems than that. Whenever I push the accelerator so the revs go above about 2000, the things dies away. If I push it to the floor, it pops and bangs. Does anyone have any advice on this? The condition of the bodywork on the car is so good, I really want to save it. I could try to find a 190E and replace the engine or try to fix the original engine?

Am interested in the replies you get. I'm also thinking about the same (fix or replace ) more often lately since she just clocked 190k

If it's a healthy engine dont worry about it, you should get to 300k with it.:thumb:

I dont think the engine itself is at fault, your problem is fuel or ignition related. Have you checked to see if it's running rich or lean? Has it got a good spark at the correct time? Have you changed the fuel filter and spark plugs?

Yes, I hope the problem is not the engine. I had a look today. The spark plugs are new and there is a spark from all four. I pulled the throttle until it dropped. The engine revs up to a point then just drops back down to a slower idle. Then, if you try to pull the throttle more, it starts popping and banging while staying at the slow idle.

I had a look some more today. I adjusted the air fule mixture a bit but I could not get it to run smoothly. I have found that the idle is actually pretty rough. Also, there is quite a bit of smoke coming off the engine. Coming out of the top.

sorry to resurrect an old threa buuuuut;

Ive a blown head gasket on my C123 and im having trouble locating the specs for the replacement bolts (have a new gasket).
im getting conflicting info and im unsure what to order.

my workshop manual only shows either 6 cylinder head or 115 head.
my 230ce has an M102.980 / 123.243

any bolt kit shows 10 x M12x120mm bolts. BUT im also seeing 4 x M10x90 + 6 x M12x145 + 4xM12x34.

can someone PLEASE tell me what bolts my cylinder head takes??

TIA

EDIT: Mods please move if wrong post location

Probably easiest is remove the head and see what bolts come out and order appropriate to that.

Look them up for a 190E
