Well, my car is fixed

It was the ignition switch after all so thanks for the advice on that. I was rather sceptical that this was the cause because in every position something worked, but the garage gave me the old one and sure enough its broken inside, There are some positions of the switch that make more than one contact and that was the problem.
I have to say the independant garage in Derby that it was recovered to were very professional and managed to find the time to look at it and get it sorted. So a big thumbs up for Hughes Brothers.
