Toying with an E320 estate, which is very good value but might possibly be showing early signs of a 5 speed auto starting to misbehave (a minor reluctance to engage reverse). Has anyone refurbished one of these and what sort of cost involved? It has been serviced regularly and had a new speed sensor not so long ago.

MB will do it (in Germany) for Eu3000 and will replce everything (with MB-Genuine parts) that needs doing for that price including running it up on their test bed to verify it is functioning exactly as it should.

I can send you the email address if you like Charles...

I was thinking more of a Pole in a shed somewhere.. The car isn't worth that much.

I see, well there is the hottie licking tyres over on the Caption Competition thread...! :):)

Practice dancing on a pole in the shed and you'll soon be good enough to make sufficient in tips to pay for a proper gearbox rebuild!

That's a very cunning plan, ss201. I can only identify one minor flaw..me.

Hi,
Try Olly, he got someone to rebuild both my TC and 5 speed (722.6)GB when the 55 engine was fitted, very reasonable price too.

It had a transmission fluid service only a year ago.

I have decided not to go ahead - it was my old green car, up for sale at a semi-attractive price, but it needs a bit too much done.

So had mine but, while I cannot prove it, I am convinced that the previous garage didn't drain the torque converter so it was less than half a fluid change.

Speak to Transmission Technology in Knowle and mention Jay from Mercland referred you.
Excellent knowledge of MB's boxes.

Thanks all - having just checked Car and Classic it has sold recently, so good for them. Given it has had new spheres, loom, coilpacks, rear discs, head gasket among other things and was a well specced late 320 with ASR and ortho seats, I think whoever bought it has a good one - who knows how long any transmission problems would take to manifest in a serious way and the quantum is not enormous.
