Going to change my gearbox oil and filter tomorrow.

Firstly, does anyone know the torque settings for the gearbox sump pan bolts?

Secondly, what's the capacity of the box if I drain the torque converter too? Haynes says to refill with 4 litres initially and move the selector and check several times. I've seen people on the forums mention 7.5 litres....

It's a 1991 230E with the old 4 speed auto.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Also, am I correct in assuming it's Dextron II in these elderly gearboxes? Thank you :)

I would get the gear oil, filter and gasket from a MB dealership to ensure you get the correct oil and amount. They might just be able to advise you on the correct torque settings too.

i have done this job.

i put genuine MB oil in there last time..... around £100 just for the oil!!!!

just put dextron ii from gsf car parts.

use genuine filter

dont forget to drain torque converter. you may need a new plastic cover for the area around the torque converter

the torque for the pan is very low... finger tight and then a little bit more. the actual torque value is on here somehwere

I actually completed the job on Saturday before anyone replied.

I used a genuine filter and gasket. Oil I found out was Dextron II which was purchased from GSF. It took about 5.5 litres. I did indeed drain the torque converter too.

The fluid that came out was red and the filter didn't look too bad. Only changed it as I didn't know for sure when it was last done.

Thank you everyone who took the time to reply :)
