When i bought my S124 a few years back I failed to realise how much of a pain its MOT date of 22/12 was going to be...........should have put it in midsummer just so any further faults meant i wouldn't be stuck under it cursing throughout xmas.

Broken spring and corroded brake lines.

Springs sorted.....brake lines:doh: When i was much younger I used to do my own work, brake lines were knocked up and fitted without too much bother.

Unfortunately the mot tester has logged BOTH front to rear lines as corroded, only one exists! He incorrectly logged a SLS line as a brake line with VOSA.
Upon reinspection we agreed neither line is corroded. He had traced the lines incorrectly over the suspension/rear subframe. We did agree the lines to the wheels should be replaced.

Unfortunately the splitter wouldn't release any of the three lines into it and all three had to be cut.

With the lines out it became clear the corrosion was only superficial and that the plastic coating that merc apply to the lines was the main deterioration.

So if your car is as old as mine get under it with some wire wool and clean those lines before your next MOT. Pay attention to the pipes near the unions. My parts bill is £45 and climbing. If they need replacing then it should be done, nearside is 445mm long and offside 900mm (if you want to make your own). On my estate the line from the front comes into the top of the 'T' splitter with the short run to the nearside going to the bottom of the 'T', the tester got this wrong and failed the front to back line because of this. The splitter is about a tenner at merc, cheaper ones probably wont have the hole for screw to chassis.

Has anyone managed to feed a line back to front over the subframe on its factory route without dropping any suspension parts? That brake line is near thirty quid (ouch) but if I can flare the old end I cut I will, but if anyone has managed to feed this line through could they let me know thanks. I just dont want to spend thirty quid and not manage to route it.

Cheers/Happy New Year.
