W124 E220 wiring harness, UK RHD.

Anyone? Mercedes told me to email my local "workshop" which I did and they couldn't be bothered to reply despite the fact I emailed them twice so far which got my back up. I don't mind used as long as the insulation isn't degraded (ideally if it's used it should be a replacement from during the car's lifetime rather than the original one).

Come on, give me prices and make me weep!

Thanks, that's a hell of a lot of money and my local Mercedes dealer (they're in Wandsworth but call themselves Mercedes-Benz Chelsea) have a huge markup as I found out in my previous dealings with my ex-W202 (£450 for a new key fob and synchronising just for the damn car to die 8 days later from ECU failure triggering a mini-apocalypse)

Maybe I will have to risk second-hand? Anyone breaking their E220 in the UK with a good condition harness?
 
Eastbourne Mercedes do them for around £500...

Forget second hand, you will be wasting your time and money.
 
£500... <screams> I looked under the bonnet and the photo I attached is the only sign of degrading I could see and it just overrevs at idle every now and then so maybe it can wait? Will even the aftermarket second hand ones (i.e. from scrapped cars which had their harnesses replaced) be bad?
 
cut open the loom in a few places and look for cracked plastic sheathing..it WILL be there. the occasional surging/overrevving is the exposed wires making contact/circuit.
 
The looms are specific to the car, a loom from another similar car may not be the same as yours.
 
And running electrical tape around the exposed bits as a temporary fix if there aren't many under the sheathing?

I knew it would be expensive but that's half the value of the car!

A perfect used on should be no more than £100 inc delivery, it's not like E220 harnesses are much of an issue.

You'll struggle to get a quote on a new one off MB as unless they have them in stock they make them to order, and can't quote firm prices due to the copper prices being volitile.

what's the problem with your car exactly.

the 4 pot cars do not have the same problems as the 6 pots regarding wiring harness.

the exception is the cable that goes to the maf.
 
If you have idle problems first thing is to clean the throttle body throat/butterfly= they get gummmed up!
 
I've just been through this whole process. I was unlucky as the ECU ended up getting spiked as a result of the wiring loom shorting out so I would strongly recommend getting on with replacing the wiring loom at your earliest opportunity or sooner.

For what it's worth, R&R of the engine harness & injector harness and an ECU refurb cost me a smidge under $AU4,000 (GBP2,560).

Before this job, my car would actually start and drive perfectly well for approximately forty five minutes. After this, it would start to idle erratically, conk out, surge under load and get this, the air conditioning would cease to blow cool air. Go figure!

I could see the original harness was definitely on it's way out even without cutting it open. Insulation at connectors (at various sensors) was eroded and I could see exposed wires.

The car is as good as gold again now. Interestingly the air conditioning didn't need looking at. It's functioning normally once more too.

Cannot see the loom causing that.

Have you had the fault codes read ? Any showing ?

You need to get a vacuum gauge on the inlet side and it will show air leaks.

Had similar issue with my old E220 Estate at 270K miles - overrevving at idle. A cobbled together newish part loom sorted it. The throttle body had been cleaned loads of times and made no difference.

On a different car, a C180, I had had similar issues with that. This was cured by a new spring fitted to the throttle body. It had become weak with time.

So the question is can anyone here supply a vgc used loom? It differs from model to model so I will give (or repeat? My memory is dire) as much info as I can:

W124 UK 1995 facelift M111.960 E220 Coupe no cruise control but has a/c (controlled by dials). I have no idea how much of that makes any difference. The degraded bit I saw was plugged in on (/to?) the right of the engine

I don't know if I can trust myself playing Frankenstein with the wiring harness but I'm sure my local indy won't mind.

Oh yes they do.

I have replaced a few now.
 
My advice is not to fit a second hand loom as it is very likely to be in similar condition. If you have engine issues too (other thread) are you sure its worth spending that kind of money??

I think something like this Mercedes : 1993 220CE AMG Coupe For Sale might be a better option,without those wheels of course
