Just pipe dreaming again. Can any of you knowledgeable souls tell me if the last of the 124 diesels, 24valve, my95/96 were fitted with the 5speed electric gearbox? If so, were any of the 24v cars not so fitted?

No real facts I'm afraid Derek.

I think they left the diesel estates as 4 speeders and some of the very late saloons got the five speeders. Dash will be along soon I'm sure.

Diesels were never offered with 5-speed option. Well at least thats what the price list says.

Have a look here:

W124 Timeline

The 5-speed was only offered on 6-cylinder petrol cars. In theory you could retrofit one to a petrol car but it'd be a huge amount of work for little gain

Because the diesel has no inlet manifold vacuum it has a pump-driven vacuum system to control the gearbox that is unique to that model

Thanks Nick that is useful info. My problem with the 5speed is the need for a road-speed input which the recipient car hasn't got. All the 300TD's in the 210 have the 5speed fitted and the interplay between the varicose ECU's make retrofit an impossible job. But a 24v out a 124 with a turbo bolt-on shouldn't be far off the same BHP.

Did you not get anywhere with the G Wagen with one fitted then Derek?
