W124 E36 blue smoke on startup..

Dieselman,
Thanks for the additional info that actually makes it work 100% It was late and I tried not to add too much detail in my post. ;)

As RayH says it worked well on his 280 and likewise on the one I had. Oddly enough the top end wear on mine actually helped
stave off valve seat recession when I ran it on LPG. That's another story though.. as they say.

So, I recommend finding that long downhill and try to get to, say, 80 or 90 at the top, then drop it into 3rd as you coast down - WATCH THE MIRROR.

Do let us know how you get on as that sounds like a mighty interesting motor.

Hi Ray - I will have a go at this as soon as I can work out the best place to do this... I think there's somewhere locally, but it's quite a busy road. I'll have to time my run

And I would be interested to know where and how you mounted the tanks! Is that a W124 you had on LPG? Doughnut in spare wheel well?

Sorry I'll clarify, it was a 280 engine in a G-wagen body. :) I'll ask a pal who does LPG conversions where he puts the tank on a 280 saloon/estate. Probably a doughnut tank.

It may not do it first time ...

I recall that ours chuffed out blue smoke QUITE consistently but not always. I wouldn't feel 100% confident with the results until I'd seen evidence several times. My experience of vacuum sucking oil down was built up over numerous heavily laden dashes between London and Dordogne.

So, don't assume all is well if it doesn't 'chuff' at the first test.

Good hunting.
