W124 E500 gibberish

Will do if I end up buying it. I'm pretty clued up with E500s - any specialists fancy coming around? Car is in circester in west Sussex.

Chichester is only 14 or so miles from PCS in Horndean. Maybe you could persuade Olly to pop over for a look or incorporate a visit to him as part of your test drive.

Wouldn't hurt to get it on a lift for a thorough checkover.

Cheers mate. Just dropped him a line but not sure if he is around on Sundays. Would be ideal to have it up on a ramp so we can fully inspect the diff/gearbox and engine for damage/leaks from the bottom end.

Would also be nice to see if it has any major rust or accident damage...

Not my cup of tea, but I hope it's OK, and what you want. Cars (and motorbikes - don't ask how I found out...) rarely look as shiny in the metal as they did in the pics on eBay. Good idea to get it up on a ramp - BEFORE you hand over the money, I presume.

Psssst. (that's me whispering by the way) How did you find out?

Cheers mate. I'm not handing over a penny until I'm 100% happy with it. I've told the seller I'm checking it out first before paying. That said I'm a serious buyer and if it is as he says it is (no rust, engine/gearbox mint etc.) then I will buy it.

If I'm honest I've been looking for a 500E for a while and this one seemed to tick the boxes. I am looking for a project and while this one is quite expensive it does seem to have had some work done (updated to E500 spec, S600 grill, AMG splits, H&R's etc.) which would be the mods I would have done.

Plus I've bought loads of cars and seen tonnes over the years and VERY rarely do they look as they do in the pics!

Oh, all right..... I bought a Suzuki Katana 650 - dark metallic maroon, gold wheels, lovely bike - unseen, on the strength of the pictures, from a numpty in Folkestone (I didn't know he was a numpty then). It was only when I went to collect it - AFTER paying for it by bank transfer - that the seller mentioned that the pictures had been taken five years earlier. Since then, it had been standing, unridden, in a leaky seafront lean-to garage....

To be fair, it wasn't a complete wreck; it wasn't NEARLY as good as that.

I bought a Berlingo van unseen - from a florist near Gatwick. It was about 10 years ago.

It was actually better than described - and it's still giving good service to the chap I sold it to 3-4 years ago.

Guess i was very lucky...

I never learn, but sometimes it works out OK. I bought my E55K estate unseen (except for the eBay pics), but I had a long chat with the seller, and I assessed him as genuine. He was, and so was the car.

I'm just about to buy a bike, again unseen except for the pics (Do ya feel lucky, punk? Well, do ya?), but I'm prepared to take the chance. I've had a long chat with this seller too, and if he's not 100% genuine, I'll eat my own underwear...

Cheers gents. Should be going to Olly at PCS for an inspection as long as I can get it booked in. So that'll give the car a proper once over so I'll know exactly what I'm dealing with.

Guys - looks like the dream is over! Wokeup to a text from the owner saying he has pulled it from sale as he can't bring himself to sell it with many apologies.

I'm gutted to say the least...

Any of you 500E guys out there feel like letting go give me a shout as I have cash waiting.

Cheers,
Bill

Sorry for your disappointment, but it may not be dead in the water - do you think he might waiver at the thought of a slightly higher price? If you are that keen, I'd try and arrange to see it to make sure it's as described, then see if you can come up with a mutually agreeable price. Either that, or the car isn't up to standard, and he's having a touch of conscience.

The impression I get is he doesn't want to sell it at all - plus I wouldn't be happy paying more than it's worth if I'm honest...It was on eBay to a big audience and I think it went for a fair price (i.e. what it is worth given the fact that it has hardly any history etc etc).

Maybe the potential inspection at PCS gave him a cold sweat? It could be a bullet dodged.

I thought this from the outset and you might be right mate - that was his response to my text about having it up on the ramps at PCS for a full inspection!

Japan ... Source of many a good 500?

It will be interesting to see if this comes back on the market again any time soon.
