W124 E500 gibberish

This week

Regardless of the seller I think it might still be a decent car. I remember it for sale a few years back and it was minty. Interior also had some work done iirc, genuine H&Rs, AMG splits, E500 front lenses etc etc

Would love to take ownership of a E500 and this one looks a decent example.

Good investment? Even at this sort of money..??

Never knew much about them until this year so no idea what they were fetching 5 years ago??:dk:

Right gents, I couldn't help myself and went to see the car. Bottom line is he wants £10k and nothing less, always worth an offer tho, I didn't bother. Overall it's a nice, usable motor but has a few issues and things to fix.

- Surface rust on front passenger side wing and rear passenger side wing and drivers side rear pillar (!)
- Bootlid is black on the inside and has a dent, would need to be replaced by a silver one ideally, shoddy
- 1 key and hardly any paperwork (few receipts and an MOT)
- Doorlocks have been modified so they can't be used with the key (can only be opened by the alarm fob) - abit odd if I'm honest, damage the fob and you're stuck!
- Bonnet isn't a good fit, slightly out on the passenger side but could probably be adjusted
- Headlights are E500 but not 500E so the brackets and fitting on the inside is loose/incorrect
- There was a knock from the rear suspension but the owner was convinced it was something in the boot (!)
- Engine is nice and smooth - fires up with no hesitancy. Gearbox changes without fault (only went around the block mind you as it's sorn'd)
- No blue smoke from exhaust, even once warm and revved hard
- Needs a service (couldn't get the oil cap open, it was shut tight, shows you how long it's been since someone has checked), filters and plugs not been changed since the guy bought it 4 years ago and God knows how long since then, poor form really, should have been taken care of better!
- Alloys look really good with the wider rears and it looks f-ing mean from a distance but close up ideally they need a refurb as the centres are flaking paint
- Oil seeping from the top of the rocker cover - common issue?

Didn't bother taking the air boxes off as it was p=ssing it down.

It needs a proper inspection, it's quite low and I couldn't get underneath it. The brake discs look old but I think the pads had been changed - hard to see through the AMG spokes. Calipers had been painted silver.

Overall it could be a nice car but not for £10k. I'd be happy to spend £12-13k for a decent example instead of starting with this one. I think my original bid for £7.8k was spot on, maybe even too high I think...

Granted it'll never be worth big bucks as it's been modded and has no history but would have made a nice car in the right hands and could be a usable classic.

Pictures of course...

Hope this helps anyone thinking about the car.

Cheers

Bill

Just to add I didn't look at it for long and there are obviously things I've missed as it was p-ing it down and the seller wouldn't take it out for long.

I found it odd that he agreed to be able to drive it as a motor trader and would get it inspected but was worried about driving any further than around the block as its on sorn. Put me off imo

£10k ?! That it will hang around for a while then. IMO 7k tops and then dig into your pockets for another 7K to put in right, and thats just mechanical .

Top radiator hose is aftermarket type, PS fluid seepage from reservoir and who knows what else under that the airbox and dist. covers.

Good on you for inspecting it though, I wouldn't have bothered myself. Like you say, I'd rather pay £15k for a good one than embark on a mini project.

Oh ...i do like the dark maple wood though. Rare on 036s other than Limited ones .

It's not maple wood mate - all the trim has been painted black!

:wallbash::wallbash: That says it all for me, mate !

.

I think that's spot on. Would be great as a running project. But certainly not a minter by the sounds of it.

Please can someone clarify for me, E500 and 500E. Different car, yes? And the E500 being the standard model with big engine, and the 500E being the AMG version of its time? Similar to say, E500 and E63 now?
Edit to add; So what is this car in question? A 500E updated to 500E??? I'm confused... Is it an E500 or a 500E?

Hello mate. E500 and 500E are the same cars, just facelift and pre-facelift respectively.

- 1991 to 1993 - 500E
- 1993 to 1995 - E500

Engine, gearbox etc are the same. 500E had a few more BHP due to emissions iirc. Differences are front headlights, bonnet, rear bootlid, body cladding painted on the facelift and front brakes are larger on the E500 (SL600 calipers). Facelift models also had the infra-red locking, pre-facelift only had entry by key.

There might be smaller differences that I can't think of at the top of my head. Later models generally had better spec but climate, h/seats, memory seats, rear blind etc are all options.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Ah, also the airbox cover had "Mercedes-Benz" painted in white on the pre-facelift, left black on the facelift. Facelift also has the smaller 320mm sportline steering wheel.

@ Bing - have I missed anything? Put some pics of your E500 up, it's a beaut and I want it if your friend ever wants to sell!

It's a 500E pre facelift but upgraded to facelift version at some stage. Popular thing to do with some owners or it may had a mash , then decided to facelift it. AMG variant were E60s and all facelifts 1993 onwards. No such thing as 500E AMG as the ad says. Pre facelift 1990 -1993

Ah, Thanks!! I get it now. So theres no actually AMGness going on here...

I'd let this one pass.. he's got a baby on the way so hence the sale, but def not £10k worth.

For that money I'd get a minter from Germany and drive it over.
