Hi,

I've seen an N reg w124 estate for sale but the owner says that it needs the rear suspension subframe mounts replaced to pass the MOT. Is this a big/expensive job?

cheers

Does this mean replace the bushes or weld/fabricate new mounts? The former is a bit of a pain but not too bad. The latter kills many 124s. If its rusty mounts they can be welded/rebuilt but it needs someone who knows exactly what they are doing.

I did all four rear subframe mounts on my Indian W124 when I bought it ( no welding , just the rubber mounts ) by jacking the car up and dropping the subframe one side at a time .

Getting the old ones out was a bit of a task , involving crowbars , pneumatic chisel drill and a bit of cursing - afterwards , the new ones went in easily and the car felt better with the annoying knock gone - plus it then passed the MOT .

Just had this done on mine. One side welding plus new mounts on both sides - cost circa £600. It is a very common issue.

There are 3 sets of components involved here.
1. the subframe
2. the 4 mounts 2 front 2 back
3. the 4 sections of the cars monocoque chassis that the mounts attach to.

The complexity and expense of the job depends on just how many of these are affected/ require renewing.

I suspect that its the sections of the car's chassis that need repairing as this is a frequent MOT failure point. Further to that rust in that area is often an indication that the rear jacking points on the sills may require work now or in the near future also and may be a pointer the car has reached the point in its life where constant body repairs will be required to maintain a valid MOT status.
Unless you are handy with the spanners / welding or have friends who are--- think carefully as repairs of this nature to restore it to former glory can cost as much as the car

Yes, as above. Mine was the main 'front' mounting point. It's almost impossible to advise without looking at the specific car. On the other hand, I don't think it would be difficult to make a reasonable assessment if you could see under the car. Even just removing the rear road wheels would be quite illuminating.

Perhaps he would scan and email you the mot failure document which might describe the work needed i.e. bushes worn or subframe mounts corroded.

On my Indian car , the metal was all sound , but two of the mounts had degraded to the point that the metal insert was rattling around loose in the middle of the rubber surround .

Since the vendor had purchased all four new mounts from Mercedes , I just fitted them anyway .
