Hi.
Just had a secondhand gearbox fitted in my 300 ce, and took it for a proper spin today as have been away and it doesn't seem as fast as it used to be. It seems to be foot to the floor everywhere to get it to go. It revs OK whilst parked. The speedo seems to be reading slower than you are actually going as well. The gearbox was the same number as the one it replaced. Any ideas anyone. Meant to be off to Spain in 2 weeks in it.

Not much technical help Im afraid but there is a cable which can be adjusted on these boxes. One of the technophobes will be along soon to help Im sure.

That sounds promising away, I was assured the replacement gearbox was fine.

This is where my knowledge ends (what there was of it) Nothing ventured (too much) nothing gained.

What number was that Ade...

From what you describe, it sounds like you may have taller ratios in this new box - would that sound right with what you are experiencing??

I can't remember the number but I know it matched exactly. From what I've sourced on the net I'm pretty sure it is something to do with the pressure control cable, just need to have my suspicions confirmed. I am guessing this would have been disconnected and reconnected during the gearbox change. Drives the same as it did before, except doesn't clonk as much, just lacking oomph if that makes sense.

Gearbox number is 722-358. Ade.

Does it shift up & down through the gears normally...?

Yes, it all seems to be working, just not quite the same as before, not quite as responsive on the throttle. Ade. Seems to be getting into top gear too quickly.

Bowden cable adjustment try less tension on the cable by two turns, if that doesn't work try more tension on the cable by two turns. Bowden cable is on the throttle linkage and disappears down to the transmission, adjust at the throttle cable end.

Sometimes there are two plastic tabs on the throttle linkage, when these two tabs are aligned this is where MB say is the nominal position, you can go either way buy a little bit to tailor the shift points for you.

Excellent. Thanks for the info. It explains how to adjust it in the Haynes manual but doesn't say what it achieves exactly.

Let us know how you get on, will you adjust it today...?

Tomorrow night. 29th wedding anniversary today so better not be playing with cars:-(
Also it's noon and it's 34 degrees already so will have a go tomorrow night and let you know. Thanks again, Ade
