My unit still works but the central locking attachment is getting loose\sloppy and sometimes the link drops out.

Not bothered about the barrel becuse I think that can be changed.

I don't mind locking\unlocking using the doors but if anyone can help out with an affordable secondhand piece I'd be grateful.

How about an upgrade? Mercedes * infra-red Lock set * w124 124 key locks door on eBay (end time 20-Nov-09 12:26:17 GMT)

that kit is a good retro fit upgrade, but you need the whole wireing harness for it, and it aint easy to fit, i'm doing one at the moment. if anyone gets it they should also get the chassis no of the car it came from incase you ever want another key, wich are 180 quid from main stealer btw!
