W124 trip meter clicks after last reset

I filled up my 230TE yesterday (oh the pain!) and I reset the trip meter on the dash. All zeros aligned as normal and I set off.

It has now started to make a clicking sound. The main odometer works as do all the other dials, but the trip meter doesn't advance and makes a very annoying click sound every time it should advance. Probably once every 2 seconds if I'm driving at speed. Grrr!

Is it likely to be a gear that is slightly out of alignment? This did happen once before, but it very soon corrected itself. I fear that I might need to remove the dash and inspect it from behind? :(

If anyone has done this before and has any pics of the process I would be most grateful.

Cheers,

Have you prodded the reset button a few times? Could just be mis-aligned...

Try resetting it again by depressing the adjusting knob fully till it stops. This usually works. Problem normally occurs if you don't depress the knurled knob fully.

I have tried pushing it quite a few times. I thought there might be a knack to it, but now I am not sure.

The reset button also doubles up as the dimmer switch for the dash lights. I've tried moving it to the far left and far right and pushing it in. Still no joy!

After a little help from Google, I found this illustration to remove the instrument cluster.

I just need to knock up some of these cluster removal tools.

Would it be prudent to disconnect the battery before removing it?

i would but i doubt its really necessary if you dont have the igition on. its easy to disconnect so why not?

Removing the cluster won't get you anywhere unless you dismantle it once it's out. If you want to remove it the MB tools are inexpensive & useful. The screw locking collar for the speedo cable can be very tight

It clicks because, as has been stated, it hasn't reset properly to zero

Thanks for the replies guys. I've sorted it. It was simply just a case of not being depressed enough.

I took the stalk off the dimmer switch stem and pressed the white stalk in fully with the reverse end of the stem. It reset the numbers fully and started to count again.

Highly frustrating but at least I don't need to remove the instrument cluster.
