My W124 had it's MOT today...........and passed!:bannana:

It only had one advisory: excessive play in rear o/s wheel bearing.

What sort of job is it to tighten this up, or does it need replacing?

Thanks!

The rear bearings are fixed and so will need replacement. You will need a press to do the change or a mighty big hammer.

When I did mine at the most opportune moment (evening before holiday) I removed the hub and took it to my local garage and used their press. That aside, a fairly straightforward job.

Mines went recenly. I think the bearing was about £40 from the CAR PARTS place that sells parts for EUROpean cars. My local indy said it was possible to fit at the side of the road without the use of a press. Not having the time to do it, I booked it in with him. When I went to pick it up, he said it was 'rather hard work' (we're all adults, but use your imagination) and said that, that particular one couldn't be done at the side of the road. He charged me £70 labour which I thought was very reasonable.

the estate ones are different to the saloons/coupes and are very very very hard to do.

Just to up date this: my local garage has quoted me £150 all in to do this job. Is this fair? They say it will take 3.5 hours to do it.

the larger estate rear hub and carrier is known as just being a lot more difficult and stubborn than the smaller saloon/coupe variety.

£150 all in is a fair price.

I trust it is a Mercedes specialist doing the job.

I would not want anyone that is not familiar with the Merc rear suspension layout messing with my car.

They need to understand the nuances of the job to get a good result and to spot any other needs amongst all those suspension links present.

The repair kit alone is approx £100 and includes the new bearing, very big circlip, new 12 point nut done up to 240 Nm, etc etc, so just £60 for the labour implies they have allowed an hour for the job.

Unless they have the Merc special too and it is very special for the estate, then no way in that time.

The kit is approx half that from other sources, they could be estimating 2 hours labour. I would say that's about right, i've only changed maybe 4 or 5 before, one bolt did turn out to be a nightmare and doubled the time of the others...

To bump this up again......

I still need to get this job done, and I have had quotes ranging from £120 (all in) to £400 (main dealer) but I just cannot find anyone to do this job (who I can trust to know what they are doing) near to where I am (central Cumbria).

I'm tearing my hair out trying to find a decent garage local to me who can do this for me!

Just buy a used rear hub and swap it over.

Problem solved for around £35.

according to wis there are 7 different tools required.and important not to get links wrong way around as it will affect handling

Am I missing something.? :dk:

It's a bearing held in a carrier by a large circlip. It may need to be pressed or driven in carefully, but...

I really must get this sorted out, so I rang a local Merc garage.

They said in the worst case the bearing could be welded to the hub (?) and they are quoting up to £700! to do the work. They did say it might be 'only' £200 if the bearing isn't welded.

I spoke to a local scrapper, who said they had a secondhand hub, with bearing from a W reg 280TE for £50. Should I buy that, would it fit, and how much of a job is it to fit it?

Thanks.

Just to confirm, the rear hub from a "W reg" 280te will not fit.
