I have been trying to find reference to how to change the oil filter as finding a service manual is as easy as a flight to the moon in Melbourne Australia.

Where is it?

Tips on how to change?

Is 6 L enough if the oil filter is changed? or do I need to allow more for the filter?

280SE, not 260SE? It's at the back of the block at the top, assuming it's the same configuration as other M103 engines. Total oil capacity (from dry) 7L; capacity when changing filter 6L. I'd put 5.5L in and check the dipstick before topping up if necessary.

MB have a special tool -- MW103 589 02 09/00 -- which cost me less than USD20 a few years ago. It's worth it. It works on spin-on filters and canister lids (M104).

It is a 1984 W126 280SE, so look to the back of the engine- thanks for the heads up. Strange arrangement - but that is the least of the issues as it is a great car to drive.

Would like to find a photo reference somewhere to make it a bit easier to understand.

After further digging, I have to ask which engine it is -- if the M110, then things may be different and I don't have the necessary info, but this may help:

Seems that the M110 was carried over from the W116 to the first-generation W126, with the M103 coming in for the second generation in 1985. I learn something every day . . .

Thank you, I will have to check the VIN or such however this has been a great help. Any suggestions for the best service manual would also be greatly appreciated. Either Printed or on a CD of some kind.

You can usually buy the USA workshop manual on CD for the w126 series on Ebay(USA) for a few dollars. You can buy the official one from MB USA at higher cost. You might also be interested in this manual from Haynes http://www.haynes.co.uk/webapp/wcs/...10001&storeId=10001&productId=13003&langId=-1
Its for the W123 series but does cover your 6 cylinder 280 engine assuming its the earlier twin cam?
