Ive got my SEC on LPG and the 90 litre petrol tank hardly gets used, what do you rekon the possibilities are of swapping it out with a 50L tank from a 190 or something so the LPG tank can go further back in the boot and give me more space?

NOT a good idea IMHO. Potentially a lot of grief and would be a hindrance if you or a "future owner" wanted to convert back to the standard set up.

Store the original tank so it can be eventually sold with the car and then go for a small generic petrol tank with sender unit. So long as it can be positioned in the car and connect with the filler neck you should be ok.

I'd also agree with keeping the original tank so the car can be put back the way it was .

The tank out of a 190 may well be smaller , but it is another question as to whether it will mount up and whether the neck will line up . It might also be worth looking at a W123 as a donor car since the W126 is just a big W123 ( the two models have so much in common ) and you may get on better there . Depending on what sort of LPG tank you have , it might otherwise be worth looking at getting a half-width or half-height petrol tank fabricated to make best use of the space and still use the original mounting points - there are lots of metal fabrication companies around who would do this .

Another 'off the wall' suggestion would be to obtain the small tank from something like an original Mini or a Triumph Herald which would fit in one side of the space and make up a neck to connect from it to the aperture in the wing , or just have the fuel cap on the tank inside the boot and open the boot to refuel . These tanks fitted inside the boots of the original cars so don't tend to rot .

The w126's came with an option of a smaller fuel tank from factory. Plenty of w126's out there with this option, it was a 75 litre tank instead of 90.

ideally if i could get a small tank made to fit in the spare wheel well it would give me enough range to get around when my LPG runs out. Would it be safe there though, in the eventy of a rear end collision?
