Hi, having replaced the offside engine mount about 12k miles ago I am surprised to find that the replacement has now began to show signs of failure in the same way, the rubber is intact but has squashed to such an extent that the metal parts are making contact transmitting vibration.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to why these have failed in such quick succession? My thoughts are that this has happened since the engine was re-mapped and it may be due to excessive exhaust gas temperatures (the mount sits beneath the primary cat). Does this sound a realistic cause or have I just been unlucky in the quality of parts? (Febi on both occasions)

The car is a ML270.

Cheers,
Martyn

Common symptoms of a failed engine mount is the increase in engine noise and vibration, yes this could be due to a remap. How do the other mounts look?

I intend to swap it for a new one and "enhance" the current heat shield to see if it lasts a bit longer this time. It is interesting that both left and right had the same part number to start with but somewhere along the production run the RHS was given a new part number, clearly something changed for the RHS and I'd be fascinated to know what that was (and whether Febi have kept up!)

Under load, each mount sees a different force. OS sees a compressive force, NS a tensile force.

I understand that, and guess that mb do too hence both now having different part numbers. I’m just curious as to what failure mode was identified in order for them to make them dissimilar at some point during the production run.
