Hi there,
I'm new to the Mercedes A180 - W169 - 2006. It's my wife's car and it rattles like mad at low revs. I've changed the Poly Belt and some pulleys but that's not stopped the noise

I've been told that it could well be the Timing Chain Tensioner but I can't see where it is located and I don't want to just start stripping bits off without knowing for definite where it is.

Can anyone tell me (or show me some pictures or links) what has to be removed to see where it is please.

Regards,

Martin

Major dismantling job on these to get to the timing chain tensioner. You really need to positively eliminate everything else before you start pulling it all apart.

Do a Google search on A Class; there is a specialised maintenance website for them where you will get all the info you need.

Hi Ernie,

I'm hoping I that I was looking for a little plunger affair bolted in from the outside that presses down on the slipper inside the engine case that takes up the slack in the timing chain.
On my A170 (W168) I can just about see it with a strong torch and a good squint but there seems to be a lot more plastic around that area on my wife's A180 (W169) and so it hidden.

The new one is diffrent from the one on my car and looks like this:
