I have just had folding mirrors retrofitted on my W169. To accomodate this I had to get a new door switch with the folding mirror button. After thre fitter assembled everything, he plugged in his STAR and attempted to code the new mirrors. He kept getting error messages to the effect that the door module was absent had to have software updated. I dont have the error message number. Can anyone pleeeze advise how I can get this rectified. I cant get my car into my matchbox sised garage door coz of the mirrors. I would appreciate any suggestions that would solve my woes.

You may well need new door controllers. Was this done at a main dealer?

Thanx for replying. No it wasnt done at a main dealer. It was fitted by a company in Lancashire that specializes in retrofits on MB, BMW and VAG. Is there any possibility that software can be uploaded to the controllers (at a main dealer) ??

You asked about this previously and I advised you that you needed 'folding mirror compatible door modules'.
These modules are not universal. If your car did not come with folding mirrors it will not have the circuitry for them, so you need door modules from a car that did have folding mirrors, or you need to buy some new ones from a dealer. However the dealer will need to look up the part no.s off a VIN from a car which does have folding mirrors(ie not yours).
The modules cannot be 'flashed' afaik.
You may also need a different loom/mirror frame for folding mirrors between the mirror & the door module, although I am unsure about that one.

Not yet, you haven't!
Because of the electronic complexity of the interface systems on modern cars, I have found that few retrofits are straightforward...

-Can't be much of a specialist then if they did not know about door modules in advance of the job!
Since when have BMW, MB & VAG had anything in common, apart from country of origin?

I completely agree.

Simple answer get out of car flip them in 20 seconds maybe? all done.

The problem is that the mirrors dont fold manually. Only on impact against something.
I dont intend damaging my new mirrors

Any update on this?

I am looking to get electric folding mirrors retrofitted to my w169. I've had enough of the standard mirrors which don't fold at all, and have now as a result of this been damaged by other cars.

You just need new control modules, code them and you are finished!
There is an option for the left mirror so that when you put the reverse gear, it tilts downwards so that you can pay attention on various obstacles! Its quite helpfull some times!

You should also keep in mind that if you want "memory" function for your mirrors, you should quote that when ordering your door modules!

Talk to Steve@MBenzNL and he will tell what you need to buy so that you can complete your retrofit!

I thought that this "memory" function and dipping passenger mirror only worked if you had memory seats fitted...

This is how one gets the reversing/tilt mirror function from factory, I believe. But, when retrofitting, it can be enabled even without the memory seats.
The memory capable door modules are essential.
Is there a different mirror (memory or non memory)??

Precisely the reason that I specified electrically folding mirrors on my A180.

I was quite shocked that the non electrically folding mirrors are in a fixed position and only "break off" when hit

Bingo :)

I am on the retrofitting process myself these days so i have been doing a lot of research :D

Memory capable door modules for folding mirrors, coding and you are done (i dont know if it is possible enabling the auto folding function in W169, in my w209 it is a factory option and i can enable it through Star, in my friends w203 it was not a factory option but i still got to enable this feature in his car and its working properly)

I have two W169s, one has folding mirrors that I wish to put on the other. Can anyone tell me what I need to swap?

The mirror motor assembly/frame, the door control modules and the mirror switch module. If there are different numbers of wires in the mirror wiring looms, then you will need to swop these too. Then you will probably need it STAR coded.

Hi all,

I hope everyone is well.

Does anyone know the part numbers for the required parts?

This is very interesting. I have a W203 (which, as you say, was never offered with automatic folding mirrors option), and Alfie enabled the automatic folding feature for me using STAR (great feature!).

My understanding was that I can't have the mirrors tilt down when reversion because, as crocekrs said, this was only possible with the memory seats - are you (and smatt?) saying that this feature can be enabled even on a car without the memory seats by simply coding it with STAR?

How I understand is that if your retrofitting you can order the memory capable modules which can be coded to allow the mirror to tilt. But if the car already has electric folding mirrors, but no memory seats etc the modules wont have memory function so cant be coded to tilt the mirror.

In the case of the W169 pretty sure there never was a memory seats option so I dont think there will be a memory capable door module available.
