W201 fuel pump noise

I have only had my 1989 W201 a couple of weeks, so still getting used to its personality. I have noticed than when first turning the ignition key, before the starter cranks there is a whirring noise towards the rear of the car which I guess is the fuel pump priming up, it only lasts for a second or two.
The first time I noticed it I thought it was the electric aerial working.

Is this normal?
