Can anyone tell me exactly what the tick over speed should be on the rev counter?

At the moment it seems to be roughly idling at 650rmp ... should it not be around the 800 mark?

Cannot find anything in my handbook relating to this.

Thanks for that. At least I now know mine is as it should be as long as others are getting the same.

600 rpm is normal for a 6 or more banger.

My comment should have said approx so it may well be closer to 600, amd I know when sitting in D it is approx 500.

I meant hat as a general guide engines with 6 pots will idle at ~600rpm, ones with 4 cylinders need about 800 rpm to be smooth.

The idle speed shouldn't vary with load as it should be stabilised.

I ask because at 650-ish it seems like its struggling and needs to be higher. When I ease the throttle down and take it uop to 750/800 it seems fine thats why I was wondering if 650 was a tad under what it should be ?

Sounds like you have an issue if it is rough idle. Maybe air leak or low compression or bad fuel filter...list goes on but start with normal maintenance replacements like air filter, fuel filter etc.

All that has been done in the last 3 weeks. I have even put my diagnostic computer on it and its clear.....
