Hi Guys

i have noticed a wet patch in the boot of my 96 W202?

I have traced the leak and it seems to be coming in from the top left hand corner, there are numeroue holes in the metal lining and it drips in from there just below where the seal is.

i dont think its the seal as i removed the seal and poured wter around the area and no where else dpripped other than this one spot?

any one had this happen or know of what may be the problem?

Thanks

Raj

Rear window seal would be my guess. It might also be a damaged sunroof drain pipe if it runs in that area- and if you have a sun roof?;)

Does your W202 have the external ariel? my old one used to leak in through there...

it does have external ariel, but i poured water on the area it was leaking and its not the ariel,

it may be the rear screen seal? but how woudl i fix that?

it sounds about right the rear seal, i have a sunroof but dont think its that...

how would i fix the seal? ( if it is the seal)

Not easy without renewing the window seal but you could try a small bead of clear silicon where the glass meets the decorative surround. Get everything absolutely dry first. Mercedes used to do repair sealant kits for rear windows at one time don't know if they still do.

As the rear screen is bonded in, I take it that the trim strip / rubber is just that, i.e. just a trim strip. If the leak is coming from the rear window then presumably the screen would have to come out (if possible) and be re-bonded ?

Does it have a tow bar fitted? Ive seen wet boots from tow bars that have worked loose and some that have been fitted without being sealed.

With my old car, I tried pouring water over it and being sat inside the boot etc to no avail, only when I disconnected the electric ariel did the leaking stop. - nothing ever appeared under the ariel though It maybe worth trying this method for a week or so, otherwise you may need to have the rear screen taken off/re-attached.

Got a screen guy coming to look at it and see if it is the screen or not....

Right guy come out to see the screen, he says taht he will need to re seal the wind screen to make sure taht its done properly????

when he was looking at the area he pulled the trim away and i spotted a small hole where i presume the clip attached to the body work...

now im thinking that this may be the culprit in this case causing the water to get into the boot?

Im going to seal the hole and try to see if this stops it before i get them to remove and reseal the whole screen...

he wanted £50 which is not that much but if i go via insurance its £60 done via autoglass!!!!!

Right,

as i thought there was a hole in the body work where the clip had rotted and snapped off.... thus causing the water to leak into the boot.....

i went home on my lunch and covered it with some tape and poured water over the area and no water.....

so i think the window guy was trying to pull a fast one.....

question now is what should i use to seal this hole the trim is also loose but its not that noticable nor does it really have any purpose so i was thinking of using some sillicon in the and around the hole??

I don't understand, isn't the window guy right and the answer is to have the glass removed and resealed?

Surely when this is done, the clips will be replaced, the hole gone and you're good to go. No?

Silicon is ok but wont last forever... best to have it done for the sake of £60 if you plan to keep the car long term..

I think i may not have wrote it out properly above.....

There is no leak from the actual screen or the bond between the csreen and the car!

under the trim on the rear screen the rubber is attached to the trim piece with a clip, which would clip into the bodywork.

Now the clip has rusted and the bit that attaches the trim and rubber to the car is only on the rubber and does not push onto the bodywork.

So where it used to clip onto the body work there is just a small hole left!!!!

Now i have a few choices non of them involve haviing to re seal a perfectly good windscreen seal for the sake of sealing.

A, buy the clip but risk damaging the rubber removing the old clip
B, Seal hole with silicon as a semi temporary measure
C, take to my body shop guy and fill the hole.
D, find something that can fill the hole around this size O so that it prevents water leaking into the boot.

Now on the day the guy came out i used some tape and pushed the trim over the top which has prevented it so far so it is this small hole causing the problem which can be sorted for under £5.

So there is no need for anyone to remove the whole rear screen ( with risk of damaging breaking or even not sealing it back properly) when i can fix it simply with one of the above points.

I hope this clears any misunderstandings

Yes, I think I know what you're describing but to me it sounds like a fidly little thing and I'd be surpised if there was anywhere you could take it to be fixed for a fiver. On balance, I think I'd find a window guy I felt I could trust and get him to sort out however he recommends under the insurance.

took it to a freind who runs a body shop and some bonder later hopefully all fixed ...

looking at the other clips they have a rivet which is riveted to the bodywork and that particular one has rusted off over time...

anyway didnt even cost a fiver got it free....

cant complain at that
